TechPowerUp and PowerColor get together once again to bring you "Pimp my Rig" Contest 2012. Pimp my Rig is our undying quest for the fastest slowest rig on the planet, which will be pimped up with some rad new hardware courtesy of PowerColor, AMD, ASRock, and Cooler Master. The contest is divided into two rounds, 1 and 2. Winners of the first round, who qualify for the second round, stand to win prizes including Cooler Master HAF-XM chassis, CM Storm QuickFire Rapid keyboard, CM Storm Sentinel Adv. II mouse, AMD FX-8150 eight-core processor, and ASRock 990FX Extreme3 motherboard. The winner of the second and final round stands to win the grand prize - a PowerColor Radeon HD 7990 Devil13 dual-GPU graphics card. Contest rules and fine-print can be found in the link below. Good hunting!

Hmmm...let's see for far I can go with my laptop. I probably won't be able to beat a score of 1, but I'll try. I could use that upgrade, excluding the 7990...
Btw, btarunr, Powercolor lists an 990FX Extreme 3, in the prize list, not an Extreme4.

can i use a old pentium 1 setup?

so for dx 9 .. same old nvidia fx 5000 (or more precise fx 5200/fx5300) and ati X300 SE or X200 IGP on laptops or XGI V5, and athlon or p3/p4 cpu...

By this:
Only stand alone graphic cards are valid for this competition
I understand that Integrated graphics chips are not allowed, so those two aren't eligible to enter the contest.

I totally could have had a shot in this maybe 2 years ago when I still had my Pentium machine.
60MHz, 64MB ram, and what I think was a pci FX5200 iirc.
That bad boy had a smoking ~520MB hard drive, I had to use nlite on a windows xp disc to bypass xp's hard drive space requirements.

Time to break out the fx5700 and semprons.

don't have a dedicated graphics card can i participate???

The Rules said:
4.Only stand alone graphic cards are valid for this competition

No.

For me this kind of competition is a bit fake.
The 3D Mark 2003 programmers can participate and program it to show 0.00001 Points
So, no matter what prize it is, i wont be part of it.

this is way to easy to falsify
it should be limited to off the shelf-hardware that is running at the rated clock speed

Don't ruin my fun. I already dug up a 128mb stick of DDR1, FX5700 and sempron 2500+. Turns out you can passively cool a sempron 2500+ with my water loop.

I have a 4x86DX with 32MB RAM, S3 Virge GX and Windows XP. Anyone can beat this????

Everyone can you don't support DX9 so it doesn't even qualify.

Boy, the description leaves practically everything to be desired.

So, I have to come up with the lowest spec rig that can accommodate a DX9 GPU, in order to score the lowest on 3DMark03?

Well, how is that a competition? Just get the slowest DX9 card and underclock it.

Also, what does it have to do with Pimping? Is there any modding involved?

It isn't quite that simple. None of the tests can go N/A so there is a minimum score you can make. You can also try it on any rig with PCI since all cpu's can downclock...If you don't like the competition why bother posting?

I'd like to enter my rig but if I win, but not only do I not like the keyboard, mouse, or case, I'm afraid I'm going to end up with a new motherboard, a new processor, and no memory, which would make both of them worthless (unless I decided to sell them or something) and even if I only win the first round I'd end up with a better GPU without a decent PSU to support it.

Finally, a benchmark my bulldozer chip will be good at.

This should be done based on the rigs in people's signatures, and the longevity of that rig. It's too easy to throw together something that will fare really poorly. Hell, it'd be worth it to go to walmart and buy a pci 5500fx and stick it in my old socket a nforce 2 mobo just to take a shot at a few of the prizes...it just seems too easy to come up with a pitiable system that you don't really have or use. meh

Is underclocking aloud as well as running background programs to slow the benchmark down even more? Or is that considered cheating?

I just underclocked my FX-4100 to less than 800MHZ, with all of the other dividers and multipliers bottomed out, and downclocked my video card as low as it would go. It took like a hundred years to boot up and load windows, and another hundred years to open up 3dmark03, but it still managed 30-60FPS...:banghead:

Definitely going to need a lame GPU for this.

I assume that in order to win, yes.
