AMD's new A10-6800K "Richland" APU is turning out to be quite the chip for competitive overclocking. Finnish overclocker "The Stilt" cracked the 8.00 GHz mark with the chip. Skills aside, "The Stilt" relied on liquid-nitrogen cooling that kept the chip at -185°C, a core voltage of 1.992V, a base clock of 126.99 MHz (~127 MHz), and 63.0x BClk multiplier. All four cores were enabled during the feat. Other key components of the bench include an ASUS F2A85-V Pro motherboard, and 2x 4 GB dual-channel memory of an unknown make, running at 1692 MHz (DDR) Find details and validation links here.

That is impressive, out of all the chips I expected to break 8ghz, an APU was not one of them.

I just really dont see the point of this. It has absolutely zero real world impact. Dont even bother trying to sell the argument that it helps the developers and manufacturers create better chips in the future. It does NOT. Until there is a Heatsink/Fan or Watercooling Kit that can cool as well as LN2 *sarcasm*, these tests are nothing more than bragging rights and a waste of time.

Hobby? ..... fun? ..... challenge? It does not all have to make sense, some people just enjoy tinkering, let them tinker I say, I have just learnt something from this..... if I want a decent overclocking FM2 board to go with a 2nd build using the 6800K then this Asus board is the one to go for!

Nah it proves that the chip can take good clocks. Now then, if we remember Pentium 4 could take crazy high clockspeeds and still perform like shit, this can mean nothing. However, it still has the potential to become a little beauty (if ignoring power consumption)

we perceive what our minds wants us to think. at the end of each neuton, sensor, our mind is there. our unconscious controls everything. maybe we are far too evolved already and are living in a virtual reality created by our own minds.
ever one has dreams right? they feel real. so that proves how our unconscious can control what we perceive.

maybe the point in overclocking a $150 chip to 8ghz is because Intel won't let you do that anymore? Or maybe its because you have some LN2 laying around? Or maybe its because "why the hell not?". Don't question it, just celebrate the fact that we exist in a time that the technology exists, that companies build platforms to push the envelope, and that geeks are willing to put in the time, and that sites like this can bring the accomplishments to the masses :toast:

You do understand thanks to people overclocking on LN2, LHe and DICE we have gotten better and better motherboards, ram, powersupplies, CPU's etc right?

You could look at it that way. Or you could embrace that the future is tomorrow - maybe someone somewhere (maybe even a TPU member) will invent a cooler/cooling system that makes both a heatsink/fan combo or even watercooling kits obsolete?

Everyone needs a hobby, some people collect trains, planes and cars.. Some people perhaps like to overclock CPUs to amazing speeds.

You're right, you'd have to be an idiot to tune an engine to produce up to 2000hp, then only ever run it at idle. ;)

Once you confirm that the engine can idle, tell the engineers and they will attempt to improve it so that it can actually hit 2000hp rather than just idle. :cool:

I hope for better days in this forum where when an extreme OC article comes out with record breaking overclocks no longer recieves these less-than-thought-out comments. Every. Single. Time.
Anybody that has to post a "I dont see the point in epic overclocks" is clearly reading the wrong article, and forum.
It's like walking into a Ferrari garage, and then complaining at the engineers when they make a car that goes 200mph, because nobody will ever go that fast for sustained periods.

I think this is awesome, and I believe AMD's APU's are simply going to muscle out FX CPU's entirely, and they'll be AMD's bread and butter for all systems.

I'm actually impressed with this...Not gimped with only 1 core...has all cores running with more than 1 stick of ram...

Absolutely, I appreciate this train of thought of course. I'm certainly not one to belittle these achievements and I know stability isn't exactly the point here.

It would just be nice to see how such extreme overclocking translated into real world performance vs [insert cpu of choice here].

I hate how everytime an extreme oc article is posted there is a post similar to yours, this is very significant for the same reason ivy doesn't clock better than sandy. Its because limitation wasn't heat it was the design, in this case the limitation is heat so under smaller nodes the architecture still has plenty of clock headroom to go since power consumption and heat goes Down wih smaller nodes. In other words we are likely to see architecture ipc improves as well as clock speed increase with every new family of CPUs under this design
