Pirate Bay wants to buy Sealand

I dunno... Ah!! They have nukes let's invade them says Bush

I dont really think the US would look too good after it carpet bombs a small platform of internet pirates. I think they'd set an embargo, if that. Theres always going to be a country to come help though..

ps. anybody know how large the platform actually is?

not very big
it will house the servers and pheraps a guard :)

This is actually VERY interesting..

Before the authorities had no problem with ppl living outside their borders, because there was no way that those ppl could interact with the ppl of that country. But now with the internet, u can live in a place with no laws and still interact with ppl and offer THEM illegel things.
Now with the Internet, there is no need for physical communication and this is actually a great idea. You can talk to whoever u want through the Internet via chat or even video conferencing.

Just one problem though - whos the Internet providor??

TPB has updated its name to Pirates of Sealand!

In between some of this pointless babble going on here ::rofl:: This is indeed a weird and intriguing story. I mean, it wont be its own country per se, but I mean, who will actually live there? Kind of stupid to put 100 million dollars (pounds, sterling, euros whatever the hell) for a small platform and use it to illegally host files.

I agree, but it becomes even more absurd when you realize they don't even host the files themselves. They essentially just point you in the right direction.

But if the RIAA somehow managed to prove TPB guilty under some Swedish law or another loophole, they could potentially be in a lot of financial trouble. Plus, the site isn't paying for Sealand itself - a large proportion of the money is hoped to come from people donating, although admittedly I can't see that being anywhere near £100m (which is only about $50m). They must make a hell of a lot of money from ads to justify such a move.

Any news on this?

so does this mean the piratebay will have its own army?

WIKI:

In early 2007 Sealand was offered for sale.[2] As a principality cannot technically be sold, Sealand's current "owners" plan to "transfer" custodianship.[3][4][5]

From 2007, Sealand is available for transfer by Spanish estate company InmoNaranja.[6] It is explicitly stated that Sealand is not for sale, as a principality cannot be sold.[7] A sum of between £65,000,000 and £504,000,000 (US$ 998 Million, €750,000,000) is set as the price for the new tenants.[8][9][10] Offers of "eight digits or over" are being solicited.[11]

so you arent buying it, but just renting it with a one time charge.

Perhaps I was just very late on last year's April 1st... this really is/was a true story, but TPB just doesn't have the finances it needs.

No, I saw this in one of my textbooks at college a year or 2 back. If I'm not mistaken, this was a platform used during WWII or something like that and then a family bought it and literally turned it into an independent nation. It's a really interesting story.

I should buy an island and make it a nation.

Main imports: Junk food, candy, porn, blank CDs/DVDs, soil, chemicals.

Main exports, Heroin, cocaine, warez, marijuana.

Random is president.
