Radeon X2900XTX RIP - long live the HD 2900 XTX!

Fudzilla was the most hasty again in disclosing the name of the new high end Radeon branded cards. There won't be a X2000... card, but instead, the name will be HD 2900.... So the first one off the line, that will make it to the market, will be the Radeon HD 2900XT with 512MB of GDDR3 memory.

I don't really like the existing ATI naming convention (eg x1950xtx, too many "x"). This change may be for the better, IMO anyway.

I find it hard to believe that only a DDR3 modal will be on the market for a while. When the X1950XTX is currently using DDR4.

I think ATI should just call their top end card "Phat Lewt 1" and be done with it.
That way if you by a "Phat Lewt 1" card, you know your getting their top of the line card.
When they come out with newer card, remane the older cards to "Yesterday's Phat Lewt".

Names are getting too complicated. If I were naming them it would be like this classic ATI naming from the 9800 days:

High End: Radeon 2800XT, 2800Pro, and 2800
Mainstream: Radeon 2700XT, 2700Pro, and 2700
Low End: Radeon 2600, 2500, or lower.

That way there is a clear naming system identifying hierarchy. None of this X1900GT being faster than the X1950GT. It took me all of five minutes to come up with something that was probably rejected by a team of 200 marketing specialists, but makes more sense.

I purposely dropped the HD prefix. I was going for clear and concise. Of course my names do look weak next to an Nvidia GeForce 8800GTX SLI über Edition. So I suppose some revenue would be lost to people who impulse buy without doing research. I think having a clear easy to remember naming heirarchy makes it easier for people that do put thought into which components the purchase.

Well, these marketing strategies with name changes do work. Remember a few years back when electronic manufacturers were puting "Digital" or "Digital Ready" on everything, even though it didn't mean or do anything. HD is now a key marketing word, and will sell, especially the average consumer that wants to buy a HD DVD, along with a HD Television.

There is no way that the R600 is going to be called X2900, because that just dosent make any sense at all. People in this forum are just usually very un-skeptical, wich isnt a good thing..

Quite a lot of places have been claiming the first card will the the X2900, and it makes sense when you consider that ATI wants to sound better than NVIDIA. The 2900 sounds better than 8800 to some people because it has an 9 rather than a 8. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I find it believable, not that the name matters to me.

Im thinking this will still spar very well with the 8800GTX. I wonder if ATI is holding the HD XTX 1gb GDDR4 until Nvidia's uber edition is out. Either way, I love it.

NVIDIA had there cards out for at least 5 months now. So, AMD/ATI better not release a slower card. These new R600's should be at least 15% to 25% faster regardless of its integrated options & what they offer.

I don't care so much for the low end, but the mid to high, AMD should be very careful not to screw this up. They will have to Slaughter the 8800GTX card.

As for AMD releasing the 512MB GDDR3 card? This is going backwards IMO. I think we all waited long enough.

Features AMD should address ASAP:
65nm Process (None of this 80nm trash)
GDDR4 @ 1024MB (None of this GDDR3 & 512MB stuff)
512-Bit Memory Controller (Has it)
1024-Bit Ring Bus Memory Controller (Has it)

Radeon HD to launch on May 14th

I am sure AMD knows what they are doing, but we will only know when the cards are released. Also, it is nice that AMD will not jack up the prices on the Radeon HD cards. I heard that the max price for the fastest one will be no more then $500usd. Just to put pressure on NVIDIA.

AMD HAS AN interesting R600 Radeon HD launch plan, which could backfire in a rather spectacular manner.
