This is terrible. I mod because I enjoy it. I want to make games as good as they can be. I share them because I can and it costs me nothing. Having someone compliment me on a job well done is reason enough for me. It pisses me off how people are constantly trying to get paid for playing games (streaming, youtube) when they would still do it even if they weren't getting paid.

I'm pretty sure that card has already been played here. I was more surprised to see how few people are defending Steam now after how much defense they got for all their previous stuff (such as the refund policy thing). At least we haven't been subjected to "GABEN CAN DO NO WRONG" or such yet.

@DinaAngel you said paid would make mods better and more feature rich and lead to more frequent updates. And then you seem to defend Steam for doing this.

I pose this question to you: Have you used TWC or NexusMods? Those communities do a very good job of regulating mod ownership, permissions for portions and for content, with NexusMods doing the better job of the two.

The majority of the mods on Nexus very good quality, and a significant number are more feature rich and better done than the games they are made for. Why? Because the makers love the games they make them for. Most are already updated frequently. Why? Because the makers love the game they make them for and want to make it better for everyone. Those are the REAL modders. The moneygrubbers trying to get paid on Steam Workshop? NOT real modders.

Here's a very good editorial by the owner of NexusMods on the subject: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/news/12454/?

Nope, not on Steam. They'll probably go with some sort of donation thing eventually when they realize how much of a pain in the ass it's going to be to handle these paid mods. Hell, it's already happening. Folks are just bundling other's work together, calling it something else and selling it. Nope, this isn't going to last. Bad idea in the first place, I'm surprised Valve didn't think it through.
It's called greed. Kinda fuzzes the mind with dollar signs. ;) That ridiculous 75% cut really gives it away.

As far as I know, Valve is taking 30% as usual, the rest is up to the original game developer how much they want the cut. In this case Bethesda is apparently asking for 45%.

Makes perfect sense that the game developers get most of the money. It was undoubtedly their idea to begin with. I'm quite sure if they had it their way, they'd be getting the whole 75%. Game developers are the true enemy, or greatest ally, of modders. Whichever they choose to be. It's their game.

Well I can say that if things keep going in this direction I probably will not buy TES6 or FO4. Let Bethesda deal with lost sales because of this.

My thoughts exactly
EA Ubisoft or any other company couldn't pull this off it would kill them
Valve is betting on peoples dependence on the platform and the sheer amount of users to make this float.
I'm willing to bet thats how it was pitched to bethesda as well.

What if i just slightly modified someones mod with another colour or outright copied it then had it on the workshop to sell? Yeah this is a clusterfuck. There is no way Bethesda or Valve can check each individual mod.
Is that even malicious? What actually is a mod and who owns it in this context?

In this situation mods pretty much posted up to monetize are then owned by Bethesda. So modders are basically providing custom work for Bethesda that they can in theory recycle and use in later games / content.

why is everyone hating on steam when the greed of the mod makers who decide to get paid for theyr mod or not. nothing is gonna change IF the mod makers doesnt greed theyr mods and litterally sell theyr mods instead.

the mod makers is what people should hate on.
u guys know that they can set it to be free or have minimum to be 0$
so why hate on steam? because they allowed the mod makers to be greedy or are you ignoring the fact that this is all up to mod makers.
a modmaker can set the minimum price to 5$ and then u guys hate on steam? lol. steam hasnt done anything wrong, they simply added possibillity for paid mods

so why u guys saying that modding will die out with this?
the trust in modmakers is soo low, for obvious reasons. as they are greedy and doesnt care about community. or are you saying im wrong? so why do they want to be paid instead over having theyr mod free or minimum set to 0$?

the modmakers that do set 0$ minimum should be commended. steam allowes it to be set to 0$ minimum

Gosh ethical reasons really? So it's 2015 and we talk about ethics? Lol. Well next year brain transfer will be attempted again, not many called that a ethical problem.

I think you have your definitions mixed up, because ethics is more important now than ever. What you do no longer affects only the people in your physical vicinity, the internet spreads those affects far and wide.

EDIT: With that said, I think if modders want to sell their mods, let them do so but not on Steam. On Steam they should just add a "Donate" button as someone said.

Which is part why they should be allowed to sell the mods on their own, not on Steam. But then Bethsoft would probably set down their huge, feces-covered feet anyway and sue the modders or something.

so, are you saying sending modders to prison or getting only paid mods is what u want?. i think steam did a good job preventing mods to become only paid.
Bethesda wants to earn money from all mods probbably. and steam is trying to prevent it.
we dont know that. but its worth thinking. as Bethesda probbably was thinking on getting theyr mods on theyr site instead, or buying up nexus. its just a guess, we dont know

i think alot is going on behind curtains than we consumers know.
it costs money to allow mods in a game.

but as it currently looks, steam is trying to let modders make mods for a living if they choose to

Skyrim has sold so well that Bethesda has made far more money from sales alone then the budget. From my understanding Skyrim had an ~100 million budget, and made over 1 billion some time in 2013. Could some of that be wrong sure, but it shows that trying to get money from mods now is just greed.

Modders always relied on donations from their work. Making mods was never supposed to be about making money, but about enhancing the game. The gaming community just sucks these days.
