GTX 1080 or 2x1070?

Its finally time for me to upgrade my aging GTX 670,
i was going to preorder Asus Strix 1080, but then the 1070 came out, and i thought maybe i should get 2x 1070's instead.

What do you guys think? what would YOU choose? cost is not an issue.

GTX 1080, the reason being is its always better to get the best card you can over two lower cards. Even though the two GTX 1070's will out perform it, the GTX 1080 has a decent performance gap over just one and will handle most resolutions and refreshes great. But that is just me...

I would just get a custom PCB variant GTX 1080 and overclock it.

What resolution are you going for?

I'd get one 1080. Then when the prices come down like crazy for 1080's in a year. Buy another.. Bam!

At what res? Being on a 670 now, I assume you're only at 1080p. One 1070 would suffice for that res. One 1080 would suffice at 1440p, but struggles at mid 30s FPS on some games at 4k.

The rule of thumb is, go with what you need, vs what is most powerful. The nice thing about getting one 1070, is you can always add one later if you go higher res, and still be good with even 4k.

Or, if you prefer one card, you could wait for the 1080 Ti, which may be enough by itself for 4k, but likely cost as much as two 1070s anyway.

i thought that about another 970(msi Gaming), 18 month after release i went for another, it was £5 more..

Only now they have dropped in price because of the series 10 release.

SLI thing:
Bought the second card ready for the HTC vive, SLI never works in VR(nvidia) there was so much rant about one eye per card when they released them(nvidia)
It never happened, and recently i learn unreal engine does not support SLI.

suppose if VR is never on the pipe line then SLI is fine.
i never used my second card, sold them both for £150 each but bought a 1080 before hand.
If they fix it proper the SLI weave then i be looking at another 1080 so i do hope they drop in price for xmas.

Did some bench's with 1080 like valley and 3dmark, notice its up there with the 980ti or just passed it, but in VR the 1080 kills the 980ti suppose that's what they made it for.

Seems to me they improved sli with two way and the new bridge.. But they killed 3 and 4 way.. Not a loss really imo.

Sorry for jacking this thread but i believe this question has been asked a multiton times. Don't want to create another thread to be asking "silly" questions.
I'm currently running R9 290 in crossfire, and have been thinking of selling them to buy a GTX 1080. I currently run at 1440P and am kinda sick of tired of running SLI/Xfire due to GAMING profile in which some games are "exclusive" to AMDIVDIA at times, which is annoying as hell.

Suggestions?

EDIT: Here are the price for FE in my country
GTX1080: SGD$1188
GTX1070: SGD$768

To be quite honest, if you had GTX 670 till now, get a GTX 1060 or RX480 to be quite honest. They'll still be like 3-4 times faster than GTX 670. Hell, even going single GTX 1070 would be plenty.

2x GTX 1070 will be way faster than GTX 1080, just expect issues with SLi profiles so you will only get full support in new popular games. With single GPU card, it doens't matter how old or popular the game is, they'll just always work.

You should not buy a FE unless you want to watercool it.
Buy an aftermarket model, they have better cooling and higher clocks.

Just using the FE as guidelines to what the aftermarket models cost. I was thinking of getting MSI GTX1070 X edition but aren't sure, due to my resolution. Then again, the 1080 X edition is no where to found.

Am curious to know what other members suggest based on their own 1080, in terms of their pros and cons?
