With early tests showing minimal CPU core performance gains (IPC) over the current-gen Core "Skylake" processors, Intel is taking a different approach to selling its 7th generation Core "Kaby Lake" processors to DIY PC enthusiasts. The lineup will have a third overclockable "K" processor SKU, besides the top-dog Core i7-7700K and the performance-segment Core i5-7600K. Intel is planning to spice things up for the sub-$200 market with an overclockable dual-core part, the Core i3-7350K.

The Core i3-7350K will be the company's first overclockable Core i3 part. The company had celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Pentium brand with an overclockable Pentium dual-core G3258 processor. The i3-7350K will feature an unlocked base-clock multiplier, letting you easily overclock it. The dual-core chip will feature HyperThreading, enabling 4 logical CPUs for the OS to address. Out of the box, it will come with clocks of 4.00 GHz, and 4.20 GHz Turbo Boost. It will also feature 4 MB of L3 cache. Interestingly, its TDP will be rated at 91W, the same as overclockable quad-core parts. The chip could likely come in a special PIB package that lacks a stock cooling solution. The chip is rumored to be priced at US $177.

What the shitsticks is up with that price. I've always wanted an unlocked i3, but not one that will cost the same as an i5.

$140-$150 Would have been a much more reasonable price point. I just purchased a i3 6100 for my sons Xmas present rig for under $120 back in September. The premium would be justified for a K model.

Quote "different approach to selling its 7th generation Core "Kaby Lake" processors to DIY PC enthusiasts"

How and on which planet is this i3 an enthusiast part?
How will a dual core motivate existing users to replace their aging i5's?
Why would somebody who buys a new system will choose this part instead of the i5, seeing that it has almost the same price?

This is ridiculous, we have 8-10 cores in our phones nowadays and yet the world leader comes with an "enthusiast" dual core part. Completely useless. At least if this would be cheap to serve as an entry level decent system ... but it is not.

The Core i3-7350K will be the company's first overclockable Core i3 part.

The Core-i3 500 series say "hi" (Intel only started locking them down with Sandy Bridge)

That was when AMD actually competed with Intel. Ironically enough, their anti-competitive practices probably hurt more than they helped. Intel has done squat with it's architecture for a long time and they missed the boat on mobile. Most of their IPC improvements have come from cache optimization. AMD claims that Zen will not only be able to achieve IPC gens but each new generation will see large IPC gains. Intel should be praying that's not true.

I love the fact its a K i3, but i wish it was a quad core (even with crippled cache, etc)

2016 with Dual Cores. Feels like 2006 all over again. C'mon, stop being such lazy bastards and make proper quad cores a minimum already. I mean god damn, for the listed price, back in the day you got a proper quad core (like Q8400 for example). Now it's dual core with "enhanced" IPC. Boohoo. No one cares, there are still just 2 cores and all games use 4 now. Pointless and too expensive for what it is.

In fairness there is a notable difference between a 2C4T CPU and a 2C2T CPU. In most games this new i3 will most likely beat every CPU AMD currently sell (hell it will beat older i7's too). A dual core Pentium/Celeron will not.

My guess is that Intel knows that Zen is already up to snuff & they're planning to counter any headwinds with unlocked dual core (plus HT) chips & I'm betting KL's successor will have hexa core chips, for the non HEDT lineup, as well.

They'll make use of the gap in AMD's lineup till the time they launch an APU, quad & dual cores, but that'll probably take Q3 or Q4 of 2017 to materialize.

P.S. still a ripoff at that awful price & TDP o_O

Human attributes attached to a corporation.

I sense detachment from a grounded reality.
