What 1150 skt are good for?

Is it really outdated à skt 1150 and whats différence with 1151, 1155 or 1156?

Well first of all, Intel has to keep stirring up the pot.
Just beside each platform has its own chipset with new instructions, you have to make something new otherwise people will only stay with what they have allready.

No the platform is not outdated, since it can still preform on a daily basis, but you as a consumer just dosent have any way of upgrading, just execpt if you buy a used peoduct.

Nothing wrong with 1150 or 1366 really, both still do a good job today, only downside of 1366 is no USB 3.0, apart from that plenty of horsepower still.

What I find irritating is that Intel now effectively has two consumer sockets out, as there are tons and tons of LGA1150 motherboards and CPUs, and the LGA1150 CPU's are generally more expensive than LGA1151, which is supremely irritating as I have LGA1150 and really want at least an i3.

thats an advantage when you try to sell your used 115X hardware to upgrade, like if i were selling my Ivy platform, contrary to AMD that has a great De-value with almost all hardware, but i3's stills on great price, i5's and i7's are quite expensive compared to i3's.... and mostly if unlocked processors!

great point indeed, also you might have to list that M2 SSD & NVMe SSDs ports starts on haswell based boards, so that might be another disadvantage for many users...

Also i'm currently sat on Ivy Bridge, quite great processor, plenty horsepower still!

It was a new socket, so it did serve a purpose. It's just that LGA1151 superceded it way too soon, so retailers (and probably Intel and OEMs as well) have tons of inventory left and (obviously) they don't want to lower prices to get rid of it. I really hope to find a new CPU on Black Friday.

Original series was 1156(1st gen) > 1155(2nd and third) > 1150(4th and 5th> 1151(6th and 7th)

It's just superseded by the 1151 Z170 boards. Z97 boards and their kin are previous generation products, so you won't be seeing them in any new builds.

1150 now, is for those that want to save money when trying to upgrade.


As for the comment about CPU prices, Intel aggressively controls inventory, so you won't see previous gen CPUs get cheap unless you look on the used market.

the most interesting feature on newer generations for me its the power consumption, they feature a less power hungry units, that might be ideal for saving some pennies over the new architecture, also a newer fab process that ensures several features, like a powerful iGpu, memory bandwith or controller just for naming a few!

1150 now, is for those that want to save money when trying to upgrade.

agreed, for most users that have a quite great build based on Sandy / Ivy Bridge or also haswell / Devils Canyon or broadwel: upgrade its not something justified by the notable performance you will gain, the money it worth's its too high for the maximum 25% of improvement over the performance you will get...

There were only two Broadwell parts for LGA1150, i5 5675C and i7 5775C, both crazy expensive and pointless in every single use case except maybe small machines for very light gaming.

EDIT: And you only save money if you already have a Haswell CPU/motherboard for some reason and want to replace the part you don't have.

Both of them since you dont really invest in something that doesnt worth it. Planning to transfert one of them into à bigger case and add a décent gpu with bigger psu.

Lack of PCI lanes and no DDR4 are just about the only major limitations IMO.

CPUs havn't really come on that much recently.

But if you want to run a M2 SSD to overcome the SATA bottleneck you are limited with 1150 boards (I think Asrock make one Z97 board that can properly utilise newer M2 drives).

I'm not sure DDR4 is a huge upgrade over DDR3 for the average user but no denying it is faster and more energy efficient.

Its sff computers so i have only low profile ad 230w psu in it. I Will remove the motherboard and what i need to transfert in à bigger case. Will keep it microatx case smaller better.

Any of the more modern video cards would make this system shine pretty well. Nvidia GTX6xx series or AMD's HD7xxx series for example.

The Nvidia GTX 680 will still keep up with some of the newest games very well. Heck, the AMD HD7970's play modern games with great frame rates.

Your limitation will probably be the processor, however, with some of the last-generation video cards they will still do pretty well.

As for the Socket 1150 systems, I'm still sporting an i7-4790K, 16 gigs of ram, and HD7970. It still performs great and will run modern games very well.

Make sure the boards are ATX standard first, but a quick google shows them looking like it.

eh not really they all devalue pretty quickly there are always top of the socket exceptions, but for the most part everything that intel has stopped selling on their mainstream chipset is worth peanuts.
