Satellites confirm sinking of San Francisco tower

The Sentinel-1 satellites have shown that the Millennium Tower skyscraper in the centre of San Francisco is sinking by a few centimetres a year. Studying the city is helping scientists to improve the monitoring of urban ground movements, particularly for subsidence hotspots in Europe.

Completed in 2009, the 58-storey Millennium Tower has recently been showing signs of sinking and tilting. Although the cause has not been pinpointed, it is believed that the movements are connected to the supporting piles not firmly resting on bedrock.

To probe these subtle shifts, scientists combined multiple radar scans from the Copernicus Sentinel-1 twin satellites of the same area to detect subtle surface changes – down to millimetres. The technique works well with buildings because they better reflect the radar beam.

It is also useful for pinpointing displacement hotspots over large areas, thanks to Sentinel-1's broad coverage and frequent visits.

Trump is a business man. A pure capitalist and in business you have no friends. He will do anything in meaning of money seeking and control. The one who control the money control the mass. It's been like that since long time and still. Manipulating masses for money which implies false informations, fear inducted informations and wars to get ressources of people who dont want to share with z country for political or economical reasons. He have under him one of the most powerful army in the world which dont care to use their weapons on militaries and civilians targets. Everything for the money. Shall be interesting to see how they solve it, as that is a problem around the world. Mist of this town is built on what used to be lakes just a thousand years ago, they need insane pillars under everything they build to stop sinking.

Suing could be proper if the builders didn't do their homework.

Under California law, owners or developers are obligated to notify buyers of any problems or building defects and can be prosecuted under civil law for withholding the information.

If it is settling (not sinking) in a manner that doesn't pose a risk to anyone or anything then I don't see how it constitutes a problem or defect.

When tall buildings have structural deficiencies, they often aren't disclosed to the public and are quietly fixed in order to avoid hysteria (article points to some of this occurring already). From what I gather, there isn't even anything to fix at this point.

Settling is one thing, tipping is another. They anticipate some settlement but not to this extent and presumably the fact that it is uneven has caused the lean. The fear is that an earthquake would cause further exaggeration and though 2 inches difference over 600 feet doesnt seem a lot it must has a bearing on the COG and other forces.

I've never experienced an earth tremor and i really wouldnt be comfortable living there.

Just take an exemple of my appartement block which is only 4 appartements. The corner is sinking into ground because it was built on clay land. Only one corner is sinking and to prove it you can see thé récent asphalt kinda like rising up like wrinkled skin at thé base of thé block. There not much to do because even if thé block was lifted and you fit à bigger base under thé extra weight and softness of soil wil still makes it sink. Good fondation is everything.

There are ways to right towers like this often involving the use of hydraulic jacks in the sub-basement. Because it is leaning, they're going to have to install them.

The lawsuit also makes sense having watched that video. Millennium Tower developers are going to try to make the city pay to fix it.
