I'm so hyped for VEGA. But I just can't let go the fact AMD has no Fast V-Sync mode like NVIDIA. And this feature alone is such a showstopper now that I've been using it for few months. I hope AMD will also implement it, otherwise I'll be forced to stay with NVIDIA even if VEGA will absolutely demolish NVIDIA. Relying only on FreeSync capability is absurd. I've bought a super expensive gaming monitor not long ago, I certainly have no intention of changing it again just so I can get FreeSync. Especially where I could get similar capability for tearing free gaming using software driver solution.

No, I've only been around these forums for a month or two ;)

I disagree with you saying their prices were inflated cause of their mining capabilities however as they were priced accordingly compared to similarly performing nvidia parts Iirc in fact having owned more than a couple 7950's myself they were priced lower (lower than 670's)and likewise the 7970 vs 680 etc

I'd hazard a guess that the percentage of mining cards sold compared to gaming was probably 10% if that. Now the reason that you've seen so many threads related to these ex mining cards is because we're on a tech forum and that's generally where people go when they have issues to find answers, that doesn't mean the number of related threads directly translates into the total number of people who ever bought a used amd card in the last couple of years.

It's like company reviews, people will only tend to make them when they've had a bad experience with a company but again it's not representative of the bigger picture, at least not in my opinion anyway we digress, my bad :toast:

You far underestimate the Bitcoin mining trend that occurred largely thanks to the 7970. You couldn't get your hands on that card for so long because everybody and their mother was running mining rigs with multiple cards and you had the chinese setting up huge mining centers. No one needs to sit here and prove shit to you, it's widely accepted that the 7970 was the defacto mining cards during that time and yes, because we are in a capitalist world, more demand equals higher prices. I remember getting 4 Sapphire 7970 before the whole mining craze caught on fire for only $350 / each. Most likely over 50% of all 7970s sold were for mining.

Also, yes the used 7970 were a huge problem for both customers buying used and for the companies offering their warranties. In fact it was because of mining that many companies had to update their warranty policies. People were returning 7970s after only a couple of months with used up fans or burnt out cards. There was a massive influx of these cards. There were multiple times where Sapphire Ed (public relations of Sapphire) has been on record saying what an issue that was for them and other board partners. On the subject of used, all I have to point out is the Ebay trend of "not used for mining". The fact that so many sellers had to list this is proof enough that plenty of miffed buyers were now driving the market to demand that beaten up mining cards be identified.

The 7970 was a fantastic card, much better than what Nvidia was offering and is far better today.

You're correct. A successful company like NVIDIA has plenty of advertising money. That's something AMD doesn't have. They need success to have the money to be common in people's minds, but they have to be well known and purchased by people to have that success. It's almost a no-win for them, no matter how good the product, and they've made some very fine ones.
This is worrisome. People still blindly buy stuff based on marketing when the answer is just a few minutes of "googling" away... "Bose - don't be a fool and follow the herd!"

No you are choosing to put words in people's mouths. Multiple people have said the 480 will perform closer to the 1070 than 1060. No one said compete with touch etc. Unless you are referring to the models mentioned running at clock speeds that required LN2.

Binning for 3-400mhz more on the clock would put the card even with the 1070 at stock according to benchmarking. Remember the 480 is closer to the 1070 than 1060 in raw performance. If a card was released at 164x+ it would be roughly equal.

Assuming that couldn't happen after heavy binning is ignorant. It would be like saying the 9590 shouldn't exist because not every 8320 could hit those clocks.

they do need a driver g-sync like solution... Ive been using Gsync (and fastsync on some of the stubbonr games) lately and man, i love it. So nice, no ghosting - I would be willing to buy a slower card that played smoother than one that bombs along at 135 fps looking like a jittery mess.

I've heard mixed reviews on freesync re: ghosting.

Perhaps, but it certainly will not help them with the deficit they face in R&D funds as compared to Nvidia, and Intel.
And this type of behavior by the gaming public has been the primary reason AMD has struggled financially in the past.

You cant blame anyone but AMD for their struggles in the last 6-7 years. Combination of bad business decisions and not delivering on promises *cough* bulldozer *cough* put AMD in their current position. Come back to reality and spare us of this bullshit.

Why the personal attack on him? And why are you in denial still about the most non-business minded people being in charge of AMD for years and driving it to the point it is now?

As one of the biggest AMD buffs on the page (I don't say fanboy because I buy and sell any brand), I personally agree with AMD's leadership sucking horribly, so bad it is honestly embarrassing.

There's no doubt that AMD's leadership was sorely lacking not even two to three years ago. Bulldozer was a PR nightmare and nearly buried AMD into the ground.

That said, they've been able to diversify and get themselves into a better position this year than any other. Hopefully it keeps up because they've been on a nice roll lately. Seeing them get tapped by Google in the deep learning space shows at least some amount of confidence in the company moving forward.

Yep, I agree, they finally have some decent business minds and seem to be heading in the right direction, which is commendable, considering how far down bad leadership took them before.

And I blame you for the rise in welfare costs of anti-psychotic drugs and mental welfare. If @MxPhenom 216 and his 'ilk' have anything to do with AMD's position, it's because he's chosen the better solution for him. And look at his name ffs. Phenom. Phenom. Who made that? You Mr Ungari are a lost cause.

I think people don't take into account AMD's financial position throughout that era ,I don't think they had the flexibility to compete in advertising ,PR and throwbacks that Intel can , added to overly zelouse deriding of anything to do with bulldozer(which wasn't out long and was improved by piledriver+) even after it was replaced by some media and others.
I think bad decisions were made but they were are always up against a top notch business competitor too.
The whole time I have owned my system it's been derided and mocked yet I bought it day 1 for med range Intel prices and it still does its job fine a long time later , I agree Intel stepped ahead in performance but that didn't stop me enjoying what I had and my CPU still meets all recommended specs lists I've cared to check.
Some are too harsh is all.

It only tells that either their OpenGL is somehow hyper optimized or their Vulkan performance boost is non-existent. It's how I read that graph.
