While I (now) understand the reasoning and don't oppose it, I've taken a good look at GN and to me that is a trainwreck I'll never be posting in.

If this is an attempt to 'revive' that part of TPU... dunno. Just the fact its a completely separate website doesn't work for me.

Beer and cigarettes (Vaping) on a tech site?
Sex, politics and religion should be the next clubs here on TPU.

W1z also has advertisers to consider as well.

I'm sure not to win any fans here but a benevolent dictator is within his rights.

I know I'm not the most senior of mods, and I sure as hell picked an awful time to have a couple days off mod duty to get work projects done, but I'd like to throw some thoughts around.

For the record we're not on a power trip, we're not trying to throw GN a bone, and this wasn't done without a hotly debated discussion. We don't just do things on a whim, we realise what a drastic change this might have made. Our reasoning was that this is TPU, a tech-focused website and forum. We've had rules about non-tech related discussion, but never actively backdated those rules by cleaning out pre-existing threads that didn't follow the rules that didn't exist back then. We have dozens if not hundreds of users report non-tech related posts and threads because they don't follow the rules. We (perhaps wrongly) assumed that as everyone seemed OK with these rules, we'd go back and remove some of the clubhouses that we didn't feel adhered to the general idea of cleaning house. We kept a couple of of the older threads like the TPU UK Clubhouse (for what it's worth, neither me nor Tatty had any say about this, we did not influence that decision AT ALL) because they're incredibly popular and act like a large pillar for part of the community. The Writer's Clubhouse was closed which was a personal favourite of mine, but I accepted that we needed to draw a line somewhere.

Something I mentioned prior to the shutting down of numerous clubs is the stark reality that numerous members visit the TPU forums not simply for the enthusiast tech discussion, but for the community and its members. There are those among us who talk nothing but on topic, however there are equal amounts that are here for the people, and not necessarily the content. The reason people come to TPU and make threads that are not necessarily adhering to the topic rules, is simply because the community and members here are not what's found at GN. GN was designed to keep some of the incessant crap away from TPU, and the problem with cleaning out the crap is not many people want gather around the place you threw it. There's plenty of good content over there, and it was designed to be the place for offtopic clubhouses to exist. People just didn't use it for that because the TPU forums provide what GN can't, and that's a very specific set of thousands of users that aren't found anywhere else.

Some of the Senior mods put in a hell of a lot of effort over this debate and the actions that were a result of the decision. So while some may not be massively happy about it, it was done with good intentions and a fair amount of someone's otherwise free time. We're currently in discussion with all the staff about the change and what do to from your responses - nothing is off the table.

I will say this, and take it as you will....

Part of the issue with a "club atmosphere" is that it is spilling over into all sections. We were allowing you all to go merrily about your business, making friends, trash talking, and posting whatever ran through your minds in these club. Where the issue arises is that members then think it is then acceptable to derail and take threads way off topic in the serious sections too! Give an inch and they take a mile! I seem to recall that this situation is much like the tagging system once implemented here at TPU. What started off as harmless and beneficial, eventually turned out to be something that was abused and detrimental to the day to day operations on the forums. Just like many other things which we have tried to allow in the past, it seems to be abused and eventually has to be taken away from the masses. It seems they do not appreciate the freedom they had until it is removed, and nobody seems to remember all of the actions they made along the way that put us in the position to have to take drastic measures.

While I realize that many of you will find this post blunt, maybe even harsh, but sometimes the stone cold truth has to be laid out in front of you before you can see the forest for its trees!

if the beer club ever reopens, I will edit the title and add (18+) and promote drinking responsibility. other than that I don't think anybody was ever out of line in the short time the club was open.

Because it doesn't have a Whoopie Goldberg to play Guinan

meet your Guinan. I don't have a cool hat.

Benchmark Scores well I've fried a 775' P4 12 years ago, that counts?
I'll only add this... vaping is technical, and it saves lives. I smoked for 40 years, couldn't quit. Vaping saved me. Both my parents dead from smoking, but it didn't get me.
It requires proper knowledge of what type batteries to get, what amperage ect, it requires knowledge of ohm's law, watts ect. It usually requires the use of a usb port.
In short, it needs proper technical expertise for it to be safe. In a forum like General Nonsense, that is not really reflected. This is a serious electronic device, that can have
computer input, that can save millions of smokers lives. It's not for kids, it's not playtime. A properly moderated thread I think would be appropriate. Just my thoughts.
well said, thats why im pissed of to see some clubs full of cr@p and the vaping club were we discussed and share,

Maybe, but this forum is only as strong as its users base is. When forum enthusiasts and advocates for TPU, are pushed aside because they don't fit the narrative...well they go away and visit every once and a while. The version of freedom is a fenced version. You are allowed to do anything you want here as long as it fits exactly the content we want... I will say there was a lot of enthusiasm for the Beer Club and was mentioned to me by several members. Now that traffic will go to reddit or voat or a multitude of other sites. You need to optimize, moderate, and take advantage of content like this instead of penalizing. IMO.

Lost!
I've seen a few forums in the UK alone go down this route. One I regularly visited had many regular members 8 or so years ago. Once new, and deemed by many 'Draconian' rules were enforced it ended up with a few 'mates' chatting amongst themselves.
Not saying TPU will end up like that though, hope not.

The point is, when the user base is ready, it will be allowed to grow and prosper. As of now, the user base, not everyone, but a vast majority of regulars, are derailing other sections due to the freedoms that the club section allowed. We are not trying to force other members out, we have rules in place, and they should be followed. As to the club, it says tech related, which beer is not even close. The vaping thread has a better leg to stand on, but again, the consensus was to remove it as well. Be honest with yourself, reddit is full of trolls and one post wonders looking for fame, and is not what we want on TPU in general, no matter the sub-forum. If members knew where to draw the line, we could open the flood gates with all sorts of cool features and benefits, but from the reported posts and from what we as moderators are seeing, many are not ready for such freedom. If we are only as strong as our user base, we don't appear to be that strong at this given point in time. Also there will always be a fence of some form or fashion here, they are called guidelines/rules, and no matter where you post, they should be followed. I realize we see differently on such matters, but try looking at it from the outside instead of with blinders on over a specific topic. The closure is due to topics not following the guidelines, and when the threads were started, it was plainly clear that it was against the guidelines. Just because it took us some time to be diplomatic about closing it rather than attacking it day one has no bearing on the fact that it failed to meet the guidelines as they are set currently.

I had been on Generalcrap.net for a bit.

My simple advice: Don't go there. It's a trainwreck.

I suppose the decision to close down the clubs, which I saw coming, was exactly that. It's to keep TPU on its track.

Then I say, there's also tech in vape gear...:)
Agreed, the amount of tech that is being shoved into those vapes sometimes can be pretty impressive indeed.

Edit: Would love for that one to be allowed back at the very least as I could use some advice on getting back into vaping Cannabidiol but preferably with a higher quality vape than I had before.

IMO.

The last time I smoked was when I was 15.

I smoked once in my whole life.
Not sure how this is really relevant? Are you simply saying you don't care for smoking or that you would be opposed to the vape club being allowed back. Context is key.
