AMD recently unveiled plans to put out R680, RV635 and RV620 chips, which would power high-end, mid-range and budget cards, respectively. While this is all well and good, AMD said that the anticipated R700 series of graphics chips would not be put out until at least 2009. This decision will hopefully give AMD a chance to return to profitability. The long wait for a new graphics family will also give AMD more time to ensure that they're putting out a high-quality product that will dominate the market. During the event that this was discovered at, AMD also put out some details of the upcoming Leo platform. For more about the Leo platform, please check the source link.

That's mental, the 3000 series is only a die shrink of the 2000 series and they aren't releasing anything new till 2009? The nVidia 9000 series is supposedly out in Feb 08. Poor decision

amd is screwed. the only thing they have to run off of is the 3870x2, for a whole year, whereas nvidia will be releasing the 9x series very soon. the cpu side has already gone under, phenoms were a big flop, and the stuff that actually worked(barcelonas), is nowhere to be found. did i read correctly that r700 is dx11 and for the next windows os

I don't think it's the 3000 series per say. I think this is going to be a completely reworked architecture.

It took ATI years to get on top and AMD less than a year to get them comfortably in second place. If they are not careful Matrox may surpass them.

Madness!?!? This is AMD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think DAAMIT is trying to commit suicide...
"yeah we got this supposedly awesome tech we're not going to show it for over a full year"

ATi hard at work ...

Does anyone else think that AMD will still be here in 2009?

either they have something up their sleeves, or something to run off of untill they can get back up on their feet, they'll die soon at this rate

2009? isnt that a bit overconfident? are they not gonna go the way of Chrysler by then? and the RV680? seriously competing with what... the 8800GX2? or the 9800GTX? SHORT THE STOCK!!! RUN SCURRY FLEE FLEEEE!!! haha - but seriously i dont think they have enough cash... hard to "return to profitability" if u dont have product.. :nutkick:

EDIT: @Weer... haha yeah i asked the same thing at the same time... doesnt seem like it, unfortunately.

if they dont release this asap, by 2009 everyone will convert if not already to nvidia

They're planning it this way. Pummel the stock until Samsung/whoever finds it cheap enough to scoop up.

Most of you all forget that video card manufacturers aren't making the majority of their profits off their high end models. The ratio of 2400pros going into machines from companies like Dell, HP, etc, to HD 3870s is probably several hundred to one.

Not having the highest end tech is not going to put you under, especially if you have a very competitive price/performance ratio in the "mainstream" section (they call it mainstream for a reason!). This is going to get even better for AMD as they are die shrinking the HD 2400 into the HD 3400, so more than likely they will have a whole bunch of cheap, passive, mainstream cards. Nvidia is already having an uncomfortably close competition between the HD 2400pro/xt and the 8400gs/8500gt. This should make things even more interesting.

As for the R680, AMD better price it slightly cheaper than 2 HD 3870s while at the same time having about the same performance, or I think it won't do well.

yeah the desktop im on has the ati 2400 pro but it doesnt work correctly so im returning this desktop and getting a hp due to dell's poor customer service who mislead me a couple times.

they are probably building something totally different than what the R680 is rumored to be, also i believe that its Q1 of 2009 the R700 may make an appearance Remember the Fiscal Year starts in October.

Quite plausible it could be an early 2009 release. :toast::toast:

Heck that would only be a little over a year from now. What most people thimk when they hear 2009 is oh my good its 2007 right now so its gonna be two years for it to come out in 2009, but then they seem to forget that its December 2007:laugh::laugh::laugh:

Maybe they don't want to underestamate themselfs this time around. Instead of delay delay delay.

You know that want it out right before xmas 2008.

hmmm . . . perhaps ATI is wanting to make sure the R700 doesn't turn into a fiasco like the last card released on new architecture - 2900XT. If that's the case, I'd have to say that's probably one of the smarter moves they've made recently. ATI can't currently afford another half-baked GPU to be launched.

ya know what im torn between a System build i want to do, with the 6400 and 6000 being 30 bux more, is it really worth the BE to get? Cause if the 6000 is clockable to 3.4-3.6GHz then that leads further away from the 5000 BE, but then again, the 5000 BE has adjustable Multiplier and you will be overclocking the BUs along with Multiplier the 6400 and 6000 probably have a Higher Multiplier but also double the L2.

The 5000B sucks compaired to the 6000-6400 Ghz per Ghz.

The 6400 is a damn good chip for the pice.

+1

My 6000+ at stock 3GHz(well, almost stock 12*250), beat the crap out of my 4000+ Brisbane @ 3GHz (285*10.5).

My current 6400+ is running at 3.4 for 24/7, and 3.5 for benches, on an AC Freezer64 Pro. When my water is up and running again, I think I can get 3.6 comfortably. It's just too hot to do it on this cooler.

AMDoomed.

They're talking like they rule the roost as of now. Yeah right. With the GeForce 9 series round the corner, are they going to face the onslaught with the RV680? Beats me man!
