AMD CrossFire X Support for Quad-GPUs to Arrive in March

TG Daily claims that ATI's CrossFire X support for up to four graphics processing units, will arrive in March when a new Catalyst 8.3 driver package is released. Version 8.3 will surface, as the number indicates, in mid-March. This will be the first ever driver to support CrossFire X and scale right the performance of triple and quad-GPUs within one system. TG Daily also indicated that "Catalyst 8.3 is an important milestone for AMD in 2008 and might mean much more than just another driver." Expect hardware review sites to publish their Crossfire X reviews in the second week of March when Germany's CeBit concludes. Meanwhile, Catalyst 8.2 is set to be released on February 13th.

I really doubt I can hold out building a new rig. I really, really want one of these bad boys. I'm currently planning how I'm going to be setting my next system up and how it's all going to be WC'd.

Looking forward to the 8.2's as well. Hope they have improved AGP support for these upcoming 3850s.

Is'nt the driver for the 3870 x2 version 8.2? i googled and found that apparently it is,it does support other cards too.

I just hope some review sites will show off 3 GPU's and real world benchies because my next purchase is going to be the DFI 790FX board and 2 of the Sapphire HD3870 single slots(not the Atomic's, not worth 300 smacks to me).

ahh, it looks like you're in the ideal situation where you can virtually use everyone of your old parts in your future setup, so that nothing goes to waste besides your old motherboard. I guess that thats the AMD advantage. but then again why don't you just buy a 3870X2, you'll get crossfire x without having to buy a new motherboard.

Id love to put 3 or 4 GPU's into my computer, but it doesnt seem possible on an intel chipset in hte near future.

I'm still debating whether or not I should get an HD 3870x2 or 2x 3870 in crossfire. The x2 only boasts GDDR3 at 825/1800 clocks while the regular 3870 has GDDR4 at 775/2400. Hmmmm, hard choice.

My guess would be that the higher core clocks would make up for the lower ram speeds, plus the 3870X2 is a tidier/ quieter package.

the way it's looking, after I finally upgrade my CPU . . . I'm very seriously starting to consider the option of snagging 2 3870x2's if CrossfireX driver support extends to the aging i975x platforms.

Damn, I really don't want to give up my 1950's, though

From what benchmarks I've seen with the 3870x2 vs 3870 CF setup is the CF setup does better than the 3870x2. My main issue with the 3870x2, and the reason I didn't go for it, is the fact it is LLLOOOONNNNNNGGGGG. It would not fit into my case!!!

I expect that to change Ken after the official drivers and later revisions are released later on down the line. I hope some games that benefit from SLi of Crossfire will release patches to add support.

I agree with you to a certain extent. Take a look at Nvidia, if memory serves me well, they always release drivers to support a new card BEFORE/ON/OR THE DAY AFTER it is released. AMD/ATI takes a little while as you see...
