I am considering both of the following cards, and require some insight from my fellow peers....LOL sounds formal.....Which is better???

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125089

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814261002

The 8800GT is overclocked and overvolted, and i prefer Gigabyte products (as i have had good luck with them in the past....)

But a 9600GT sounds newer and flashier!!! and the people from PaLiT sound cool and laid back and wouldn't mind buying from them ^.^...I have looked at the benches (sort of) and was wonder which i should buy.......

P.S. Due to lack of funds i will not be actually purchasing these for a month or two (this obviously plays a role in deciding....)

That 8800GT is a 256mb and is considerably slower than a 512mb. I would pick up a 9600GT for 150$.

Why are you even considering buying a 256mb 8800GT especially since you are saving up and buying it later. Might as well save/wait alil more and get the 512mb model instead. By that time 8800 series prices will probably drop even lower with the supposed 9900 coming out.
also 8800GT's 112 stream processors > 9600gt's 64 stream processors

Save up for the Gigabyte 8800GT 512MB instead price is slightly higher, but you wont regret the purchase... or even the 8800GTS 512MB (get it from XFX or EVGA in this case). However it has been shown a 256MB 8800GT suffers from poor performance as a result of the capability of the card being bottlenecked by the lack of framebuffer.

Reference design FTL. From his choices he wants something that wont have its own phases fry themselves out after one or two years.

Where do you get this info from???? Paranoia. :shadedshu

Yeah they make reference designs so they last a couple of years.... :wtf: no, thats rediculous.

If he is gonna do volt mods or extreme OC'ing maybe so, but this guy isn't gonna do volt mods probably.

Err sorry, but the world isnt that nice ya know? Reference design PCB 8800GTs have the two vcore phases fry; there is too much power draw for only two phases! Its something that I find rather alarming. Nvidia DOES NOT have to manufacture the phases so that the card will last for more than a year. 9600GTs use far less power and can get away with two phases, but the 8800GTs reference designs are known to break down more often than usual.

Sidenote: Who noticed Sapphire dropped two phases from the HD3870? While it isn't really much of a problem as a HD3870 doesnt use much power for the Vcore phase, talk about cutting corners!

I'd tell you to go Palit. This way you have a newer card. You really don't want to have a 8800gt that is 256. It's slow and not really worth it. IMO. if you do go with the 8800gt then do, like everyone else has said, and get a 512 version.

Another vote for 8800GT 512MB. Also, avoid Palit. A lot of their products are waiting for RMA in the shops.

Yeah, but if you ask the people at tpu about the Palit cards they have, then its not like that.. Only Wile E has had some grief with his cards. And if you know Wile E then you can think why ;)

My EVGA 8800GT 512mb has done fine. I OC'ed it to a good level and it has no problems. Everytime we talk about Nvidia you talk trash about them. Why favor ATi so much?

You are brave saying that on these forums. I am not saying you are wrong though. I am just saying some guys on these forums might be mad at you for saying it. I have never owned a Palit card so I wouldn't know about the quality. Their reps are friendly though.;)

Well, I built a system for a friend of mine with the Palit 8800GT Sonic. The card at all the factory clocks and was displaying artifacts. We replaced the card with an Asus EN8800GT-TOP. My friends, who work in the service of the shop where I am buying hardware (at dealers prices), told me that they have a lot of Palit cards waiting for RMA. They also told me to buy other brand.

Its all good man. I just wanted to hear from you the reason for it. Its better to know whats going on then someone coming in and saying its a sh1tty card. But, I can see where you are coming from and I guess its preference. I believe all companies on the Nvidia side are farly good. Just know that Palit is a company that is getting there foots in the door. Thats the way I see about it... I'm glad your friend does have his system up and running with not arti. :toast:

oh, so thats why were constantly hearing about people with reference design 8800GT's dying left right and centre.

just cos you bought an 8800GT with a non-reference design and 1 more power phase doesn't mean all ref cards are "FTL" dude. :shadedshu

theres absolutely nothing wrong with a reference design 8800GT, if it NEEDED 3 phases, they would have given it 3 phases. i will agree that the 3 phase card has the potential to outlive a ref card, but ref FTL?? no TK, no. :shadedshu

Like I said in another post, you should hear the noise they make when you accidentally do the vGPU mod with a 1k Ohm VR, when you were supposed to use a 100k Ohm VR. lol.

One person's and one shop's experience hardly says anything about the overall picture. Seeing as it's one place you are referring to, don't you think it possible they just got a bad batch? This happens to every single manufacturer in the world at times.

It is not only one person. There were a lot of cards waiting for RMA, but yes it is one shop. I agree that it might be only a bad batch, but I haven't heard about other brands having such issues. Also, Palit is not so popular brand and it is not proven yet that their products are tested and have good quality like it is the case with, for example, EVGA. Of course, EVGA cards a more costy. I guess that difference in price is justified.

BFG had a bad card issue on launch of the card. And Palit has been around for a long time, and has a proven track record. Just not in the US. They're new to the US market for the most part.
