DigiTimes today reported that prices of DRAM parts may rise, citing sources at Taiwan IC distributors.
Some DRAM makers have started allotting more capacity for commodity DRAM, especially SO-DIMMs for notebooks, the sources said. Capacity for GDDR has started to strain amid the strategic capacity allocation, they noted. As DRAM makers are expected to reserve capacity priority for commodity DRAM for 1-2 quarters, a price revision for GDDR is thus likely, they said. The sources indicated that a price hike is likely to be seen from the second half of May, as some system makers are expected to completely digest their inventory by then.
Let's hope this won't give occasion for ATI and NVIDIA for just another delay or price bump. Both companies are set to launch their next-generation graphics cards over the coming months. The latest ATI Radeon HD 4 series cards will use both GDDR3 and GDDR5 memory parts.

I'm completely speechless. If "capacity for GDDR has started to strain", why are they pushing it lower?

does that mean if we rip the mem chips (DDR3 obviously) off our older cards we can sell them for a profit on flea bay?? fu*k im going to be a rich bitch

this really sucks... i waiting for cheap ddr3 prices -_-

its abouth gddr not ddr

oh whoops lol, well thats still bad.. i wonder how ati's new gddr5 cards are gonna be like.

It hasn't reached gold or silver status yet ;)

damn not good!
i thought the rice of gddr was supposed to be coming down!

you're thinking the cost of standard DDR2/3, which seems to be still slowly dropping.

Hopefully, though, this set back won't impact the launch of the HD4000 series. ATI does good with meeting demands; they can't really afford to end up short on supply like nVidia can.

Maybe ther're doing to this what happened to DDR once DDR2 became popular. DDR2 is really cheap compared to regular DDR.

Maybe this is a good time to buy a high-end card. Because mid-range cards of tomorrow might not be as cheap as $150~$300 so a high end card of today will stick around for a while.

I thought HD 4 series from ATI was using Gddr3, 4 and 5...

Im not too much worried about the GDRAM prices. ATI and Nvidia (while they have gotten alot better) still overcharge for their cards.
