If you own one of the latest ATI Radeon HD 4850 cards and you're not satisfied with the reference single slot cooling and more specially with the temps you're getting in both idle and load, here's a quick workaround which might help you until better solution is available. A Guru3D forum member has found that if you make a profile in catalyst after turning on Overdrive, you can then edit it and manually change the fan speed. All steps to make it work are written here. Here's also a direct link to the full Guru3D thread. I'm not exactly sure, but this workaround should also work with ATI Radeon HD 4870 cards.

I have to give props to erocker for finding this first, but nice to see it get a link on the front page. Now only if I had a motherboard to test it myself on.

Cheers for this info, my brother just got the 4850 and he was worried about the temps as they were hitting mid 90's with low the default fan speed, this should do wonders for his temps.:toast:

Temp.s are way to high

What I want to know is how is AMD/ATI going to sell a card with such an obvious flaw. They say it is normal for it to do that. You shouldn't have to mod something at its core clock. Shame on you AMD/ATI.:shadedshu

The files are probablly hidden, you have to make XP show the hidden files.

There is no flaw. The card is designed to handle the temperatures, and AMD/ATi have been known to set thier fans on the quiet side. It's not hard to set your fan higher if that's what you choose to do. You don't have to do a mod at it's "core clock".

I assume that some people would put heat before noise lvls. I'm sure the card would last awhile with those temps. I just think that your card running at lower temps would be more important then a little noise. I guess I could be wrong. I have seen reports of peoples cards burning out on them. I'm hoping that was just cause they tried overclocking it and didn't know what they were doing. With temps that high and some cases with little airflow there might be some issues.

My 4850 is much happier thanks to this guide!

Edit: After running this for a while... I can switch back and forth and when the fan goes on, it really says, "here I am, like a hurricane!" (at 65%) After a bit of tweaking, I like more around 40%.

Really nice tweak. I set mine to 50% and its just audible over my case fans. Idle temp went from 60 degrees down to 50 degrees. Load temp went from 80 degrees down to 60 degrees.

Both load tests were playing a windowed game. Its running cooler than the single slot x1950 pro I just upgraded from.

Hey Side, you should really fill out your System Specification - go to your User Control Panel, should be in the left hand pane. ;)

The real reason why my temps are @ 60c is because the ambient temperature is about 85f in my room so...
