Since we are talking about 1080ti, a 700$ card with 11gb vram in 2017, isn't it crazy that after two generations we have not had a 700$ card from Nvidia with the same amount of vram, the 11gb of the 1080ti made it age extremely well. The rtx 2080 had just 8 gb!!

oh? no i simply think it's terrible for environment when they say bitcoin mining uses a few countries worth of electricity that's nothing when you add in all the tokens and alt coins infrastructure and mining etc. i imagine it's more like 20 countries combined - we are destroying the Earth. we were even before cryptocurrency but this is accelerating it exponentially.

i don't think it will crash this time. too many big banks and investment firms are using it now. just makes me sad. its w.e though. meh

Cryptocurrency also facilitates the following industries:
1. drug cartels (laundering money)
2. international arms dealers (ditto)
3. drug dealing (you can literally buy drugs over the dark web using crypto)

That’s apples and oranges. You’re comparing different rungs on different generation ladders. Compare Ti to Ti. The 1080 had 8 GB of VRAM like the 2080, and the 1080Ti had 11GB just like the 2080 Ti. There was no downturn as you seem to suggest.

No it isn't.
The comparison is perfectly valid seeing how the 2080 (non-Ti) was/is a card of the same price class (as would the 3080).

Ti to Ti, non-ti to non-ti. Each occupies the same exact place in their generational hierarchy. It would be like comparing a base model Mustang to a GT of the previous year simply because they are close to the same price. If you truly want a comparison you test the new model year GT and compare it to the previous year’s GT.

Yes, I would. If all I'm getting generationally is a fucking price hike, then yes I would compare cross-hierarchy based on the pricing.

i mean think of it this way the most popular graphics card (on steam) is a 1060 6g i think that still makes the 1080ti a beast in raw power even if it dont have games optimization on its side

But at the same MSRP as the 1080Ti you should expect upgrades not downgrades, the RTX 2080 is 1080Ti performance with 8GB vram, and there justifications for that is they added ray tracing which at the time was abysmal.

The 1080ti, like the 980Ti before it, had its day in the sun. It's lacking even in 1440p now for modern AAA titles. My 1080ti, even overclocked, can't stay above 60FPS in the Deus Ex: Mankind Divided benchmark with 2xMSAA.

Prices are always going to go up. If you expect to always pay the same and that is your criteria for performance, instead of the actual technology, then by the time we get to the 60xx series you’ll be rocking a 6030. A top of the line model can only fairly be compared to the next top of the like model, and so on. It’s the only way to truly see the architectural improvements. Performance is always going to go up on each tier of the ladder. It doesn’t make it a comparison for the previous year but one level up. Otherwise there would be no point in any new GPU’s ever being produced. So of course a 2080 will perform similar to a 1080 Ti and so on. So what? I want them to advance. And I’m not so foolish as to not expect the price to go up from one Ti to the next. How MUCH it goes up is of course a worthy matter for discussion.

Prices can't keep going up as then few would buy the items.

Moore's law has technology doubling every couple of years (for the same cost).

Because of this, people were disappointed and RTX 2000 sold underwhelmingly for Nvidia, people wanted them to, wait for it ...

You said it yourself
They did advance. 1080 to 2080 advanced as all testing proved. It improved enough that you even answered it yourself, the 2080 outperformed the 1080Ti. And guess what? The 1080Ti advanced as well, with the 2080Ti being a massive increase over the previous Ti, the 1080Ti. Of course the prices at each level is going to increase. It has always been this way from one gen to the next.

RTX 2080= 1080Ti performance with RT and less Vram ( Same MSRP)
RTX 2080TI=30% faster than 1080ti but at 1200$ MSRP!

Lets rewind, 780Ti 3gb 700$, - 980Ti 6gb 650$, - 1080Ti 11gb 700$, - now comes the 2080Ti 11gb 1200$ it comes with the usual 30% performance uplift gen after gen but now its MUCH more expensive because of RT cores

Mad Star Wars GIF

RTX 2080 came around with 700$ MSRP yet performed on pare if not few percentage better than 1080 Ti with less Vram, and abysmal RT performance

Also noticed i put a gif of a ray traced robot for obvious reasons

So buy what you can afford. It’s what all sane people do. I waited till last summer to get a 2080Ti, till I had enough saved to buy a used one. Stop lusting for the top and wanting it immediately. Wait on it and buy a generation behind. That’s what I always do. And I would have happily stayed with my 1080Ti through this 30xx generation too if I didn’t have some money saved up and a good used one didn’t present itself. No sense in begrudging a corporation for increasing prices. I always expect prices to increase at each level and always expect to pay even more if I want to stay at the same rung on the ladder.

RTX 2080 came around with 700$ MSRP yet performed on pare if not few percentage better than 1080 Ti with less Vram,
And THAT is always what we expect from a new gen one rung down on the ladder compared to the previous gen card one rung up.

... But not at same MSRP as of last gen top tier card :(
Why not? It’s only been rarely prices went down. If you expect more complex and better performing technology is always going to cost more, you’ll stop being disappointed. I don’t even limit it to technology. Unless there is a glut of labor or a raw material used, I always expect any new product that improves on a previous generation to cost more.

edit: spelling on expect

But more than a 50% increase in price for a 30% increase in perf.? You can count me out. The 2080Ti had the same price as previous Titan-class videocards.

That’s why I counted myself out as well. I personally wasn’t going to pay that new and waited.

Turing pricing always has been garbage and there's no justification for it. Ampere undid that mistake, but too bad they undid it as soon as the GPUpocalypse happened.

I am. I have been gaming a very long time. Everything since then is a bonus on visuals. Very nice attempt to sharpshoot me, though. Visuals are the last element I consider when evaluating a game. Are they a nice enhancement and appreciated? Sure thing. But they aren’t a dealbreaker or deal maker for me.
No attempt to sharpshoot. Simply an attempt with humor at your expense. I didn't think you'd mind. I'm sorry if I offended you.

I've been video gaming since the late 70's with the Atari 2600, Intellivision, then, of course, the Nintendo's of the 80's, and PC gaming since 1996.

I appreciate everyone's opinions and "feels" if you will.

This. 3000 series' MSRP was surprisingly fine (not counting the enthusiast 3090) but because toy money miners harvest all cards, the demand is way bigger than their supply and now their prices have doubled from their MSRP.
