a friend wants to buy 30" 2560x1900 res monitor.
someone told them that they would need to buy a new video card and power supply...

i'm guessing that is because every video card supports max res of 2560 x 1600

I personally think that they just needs a gpu with either dual link DVi-I or Display port ports. and there will be no probs with res cap.

any thoughts?

You sure its that res? HDMI is not going to do 2560x1600, Dual Link only.

Which monitor exactly?

sounds yummy should get like 3. but yah displayport

I doubt he'll need a new video card for 2D work. If he plans on gaming at that resolution he might need a new video card. Some highend video cards require a new PSU.

well, that's the thing, he isn't a gamer.
he needs it for work with photoshop and office.
i do not know which exact model he wants, but i know of only two displays with that resolution Dell 3000 something and LG W3000H

I'd be interested in a 4:3 monitor with a resolution of 2560x1900. I've not heard of this resolution before, so what make and model is it, exactly?

don't know.
but you are welcome to buy it LG from ebay. i think it's around $1300

Depends on what is his current graphics card.

But almost any 4 year-old (or less) graphics card should have a dual-link DVI.

I did a couple mins of searching and I cannot find a 2560x1900 display. Did you typo that and mean 2560x1600, cause a couple in the thread are asking that.

may be i was misinformed... don't know, will ask him

never mind this all... he meant 1600, no 1900

2560 is Dual link dvi or display port.
95% of graphics cards have a dual link connector, but not everything has display port.
So will he need a new graphics card? Probably not. New power supply? Again, probably not.

I'd get the dell 30", that thing is a beast

Ah, shame. Thanks for getting back to us though. :toast:

2560x1900 is not an implausible resolution for an older 4:3m monitor.

Dell 3008WFP only supports 2560x1600 over Dual-Link DVI. DisplayPort does not work(1920x1200 max via all other digital inputs). Could be a driver issue, but I just checked, 3 seconds ago, on my own rig.

Also, technically, yes, you would need a better vga and maybe a psu to support that vga, to get decent framerates in 3D applications.

I said probably not. and I assumed it was just to have a big monitor, if he is doing 3d, then yes he will probably need a new one
