Yeah that might be true, but first and second Gen ryzen or threadripper still whas no match for intels cpu's in raw gaming. Specially first Gen ryzen/threadripper cores whas pretty weak compared to Intel cores. But with zen 2, amd also got the cores theme self pretty strong compared to intels cores and that's why 3950X is such a great over all cpu in my opinion. As the cores is more or less on pair with Intel cores and by that offer good gaming performance while still pack 16 cores to half the price of i9 9960X.
Hope you can see what I am trying to say. First and second Gen ryzen/threadripper cut games yes, but not on pair with Intel cpu. But ryzen 3000 can and by that so can 3950X and still offer proper workstation/multi-tasking power in one cpu.
It totally depends on the title. There are some titles where the 8700k or 9900K wipes the floor with Intel HEDT offerings then there are titles where Threadripper beats Intels HEDT offerings (it's true competitor) and has better frame times than the 8700K or 9900K. The 1st and 2 gen TR4 chips are the top 5% binned from the Ryzen architecture. When I had a 1900X I could OC to 4.1 @ 1.30 volts. Then my 1920X does 4.1 @ 1.325 volts. There are no other 1st Gen parts that can get that OC with that voltage. I would add as well that I would not get a TR4 chip to play games at 1080P. 4K gaming (which is what I do) basically makes the CPU argument a moot point. As an owner of several RYzen and TR4 builds I can say with confidence that if you found a 1920x for $279....yes $279 and a X399 board for $249 you would be happier than buying a 9900k alone for the same price.
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X Review
Threadripper 1920X sports 12 fed by 38MB of cache, quad-channel memory, and 64 PCIe lanes - all for $800, compared to Intel’s $1000 Core i9-7900X.
