I know this is possible but do any sites have benchmarks doing HD 4850 512mb + HD 4830 512mb Crossfire? I think this would be pretty interesting honestly. When they drop to 100$ I might try it if its worth it! :)

If you take a look at W1zz's PowerColor review. It will be very very close to running 2 4850's in xfire. I think the 4830 just took the bang for budget card slot right behind the 9600GT.

Hexus just posted a review showing how two 4830's beat out GTX280 at a much reduced cost.

Yup. But for the price, it's a moot point.

Agreed but the 4830s will have a higher power draw with the inconvenience of a multiGPU setup while the single monster 280 will deliver 100% of it's potential every time.

No to mention the 1Gb frame buffer vs 512mb for the 4830s.

It's only a little bit more power that they draw (over a single 280). And plus, the extra money you're saving can go towards a more efficient power supply or something, thus negating the extra price at your wall socket. :D

I know, I was just playing devils advocate. The money you save speaks well for the 4830s but there are many points that favor the 280. Like an efficient exhaust cooler for example.

Plus one GPU is always more stable and will give you less headaches than two.

Temps looked decent in that Hexus review. I'll post on what I come up with whenever I get everything together. I'm assuming that wont be till late next week due to the crossfire bridges coming snail mail from 3000 miles away though :)

Yeah I was hinting to that in my first post. There are times when I wish I opted for a single GPU setup like having to change AA settings back and forth in L4D every time a round starts and CrossfireX decides to disable itself.

True -- I long for the day when multi-GPU's are as common and problem free as multi-core CPU's. That day is coming, trust me -- monolithic cores are eventually going to go away, just like single-core CPU's.

Yeah it's coming and AMD/ATI will deliver it first just like the X2 CPU. I give it one year from today.

Holy #### you can go quad-CF? (refering to the pics on that ebay auction)

You can quad crossfire any 3k or 4k card. Not entirely sure why anyone would want to quad crossfire 3650s, though...

I did always find that ability weird. :wtf:

But I guess it's a boon if you come across a box of them for free or something -- four 3650's CF'ed together would be at least as fast as a 3850.

So I can get a pair of 4830s for $220 with free shipping if I use a rebate on one of them... and that's roughly even with a 280 GTX for $360 after rebate? Well maybe not seeing as the GTX in the hexus review was factory overclocked... Would like to see a comparison against with the 9800 GT in SLI since it's a similar price.

!!!! :eek::eek::eek::eek:
just checked prices in the UK and didn't realise how jacked up they've been ACROSS THE BOARD -
I only saw the 4870X2 prices before gradually rise (from £340 to £380) and NOW I see they've brought the 4830 up to £100 and marked up the 4850 (£130) and 4870 (£220-240) to compensate for the addition to the lineup...I'm shocked! these are outrageous considered I built my gf a rig just a month ago with a 4850 for £105..
really shocked, but no doubt they're still tasty offerings...
even so though, come on..

Most likely driver support isn't there yet. The game isn't even released yet. My single 4870 runs the game like butter.

Off topic warning!!!

CrossfireX disables itself occasionally, changing back and forth between the AA settings will reset the display driver and get things scaling again.

Example: FPS showing 46 with 4xAA and 8xAF, changing to 8xAA boosts FPS to 100 and changing back to 4xAA boosts even further.

It's only a minor inconvenience and doesnt bother me that much.. I'd rather see some improvements to the minimum FSP in that game. Sometimes things get crazy with the horde and I'll hit 40 even with the scaling suposedly being active. The new CCC allows an onscreen CrossfireX notification when scaling is active and will let me diagnose things better.

/explanation :p

Yeah basically.

I really wish Sapphire had included crossfire bridges in with their 4830s. All this waiting around for them to come from someone else is going to drive me up a wall.

I can't tell any difference while using crossfire in the HardwareOC Crysis: Warhead benchmark nor the Farcry 2 one and 3dMark06 shows a whopping 1,000 point addition. I also never noticed a Crossfire logo during any game play (using 8.10) How can I test if this stuff is even working? I show 2 different GPUS in and "Crossfire Enabled" in the CCC panel. I've tabbed back and fourth to check out the activity/temperature monitor in CCC and it shows the secondary card with action on it, although it is like 10-20C cooler then the primary card and I didn't notice that fluctuation when I was testing them individually. They both seemed to run at the same temp when I used them individually anyhow.
