It depends on game and settings, and that's just today. It's best to allow some headroom for when games get more demanding. The 1080 Ti might be the only one that will fit that bill, but hopefully AMD will come out with something competitive on the high end to keep Nvidia's pricing reasonable.
Yes, agreed. With the upcoming cod infinity, the 1080 may well be inadequate, even at lower settings.

I'll bet the 1080 To ends up costing about £900 though. Too much for me to spend on a graphics card.

I'm having no issues gaming at 4k right now with my EVGA 1080 FTW. Does it hit 60FPS in every game? Of course not. Does it come close? Yes, in almost every game with one or two exceptions like GTAV and Witcher 3 frame rates stay in the 50's.

Qubit is correct though. If you can tell a difference at 4k with AA on, and ambient occlusion then you have better eyes than me, and I see 20/20. I always mess around a tweak settings when I get a game - to see if there is a perceptible difference without sacrificing the UHD quality.

From what I understand - I'll be surprised to see any 1080 Ti. By the time there is a card beefy enough to hold 60FPS at 60Hz (or even 120HZ) we will be getting closer to having monitors that support this using DP1.4. DP1.4 is capable of 3840×2160 at 120Hz with 10-bit color and HDR -but there aren't any monitors out there with these specs....yet.

..., ambient occlusion, ...
Beside shadows, this is one setting I have trouble turning off, since the first crysis objects finally look like they are actually in contact with other objects.

It's funny how bad old games look with static light maps + dynamic shadow mapping, compared to modern all dynamic contact hardening shadow maps + ambient occlusion.
I distinctly remember them looking better back in the days
