Earlier today while online the power went out for a few seconds.
I didn't think much of it at the time, and restarted the computer..
When I tried to connect to the internet again, I got a "no dial tone" error that I have not been able to fix..

I've tried reinstalling the drivers for the modem, seating it in a different slot, and replacing it with an older modem I had lying around.. no luck.
There is no problem with the phone line, as I'm using a second computer connected to it.
I'm out of ideas.. can anyone help?
I don't know a lot about computers, so to anyone who responds, please keep it simple enough for me to understand.

Thanks in advance.

Power surge probably fried the modem.

Edit: if you tried replacing it with another modem and it didn't work, it could have fried the slot itself. Try another slot if it's available.

Still using 56k?!?!

On a side note, power surge killed your modem. Get a new one.

If you need another 56k modem, I have one or two I can send you for shipping costs. $5 USPS Priority and it would go out tomorrow.

Keep us informed.

Edit, reading > me :o

Its likely that its dead, happens all the time. Thats why I hated em so much, thunderstorm, blackouts and zap!

Well I feel stupid now, but relieved.
Turns out the modem WAS dead.. and, apparently, so were the other three I tried..
I found a newer modem from a now-dead machine still in its box that I had forgotten all about.
Installed it.. and I'm now posting this message from the machine it's in.
I did think at first it was dead.. those others not working really threw me off.

And yeah, still using dial-up.. and I don't see that changing any time soon.
Neither DSL nor cable are available here.
They are in other parts of the city.. just not at my old farmhouse.

As for this happening all the time.. believe it or not, this is the first time since as far back as I can remember that I've had to deal with a dead modem.

Glad you got it solved. I had that happen once to me with an Ethernet card. Very sad day I realized an old trusty 3Com 905-TX Pro was dead.
