5850 overclocking issue??

Nice.. how stable is it though? Can you do 3-5 loops of 3D06?

With the Q9550 there is a massive bottleneck in 3D06 for me.. I barely beat your score with my 5970

its bullet proof - Ive put it thtough multiple runs of 3d06, Vantage,

CoD:Mw, BC2 on DX11, Stalker & L4D with maxed AA & AF for hours not to forget at least 1hr of MSI Kombustor which really kicked up the temps @ 99% usage it hits just below 80'c without tweakin the fan. but when gaming in BC2, the highest it goes to is 60'c

Here's a link to a pencil mod.

I haven't tested this personally so you're on your own if you fry anything:eek:
Oh how I hate the smell of ozone in the air! Smells like defeat.

Best of luck!

NAAA MAN! when you smell ozone it means your overclock is right on the money :D

Heres the fruits of a reference card :) this is my 24/7 clock

"I read about the bios flash & i may give it a go at some point. otherwise im fairly happy."

My goal with the 5870 BIOS flash was to eliminate any other utilities such as MSI Afterburner and still get higher GPU /MEM clocks plus be compatible with powerplay. I'm a minimalist at heart and if I can get the same or near same results without loading any other code I be happy!

I considered your advise and bumped the core up to 950, My pencil mod caused a statewide brownout. Here's one of the original pencil modders in his lab..;)

wonder if i can also set mine to 900+ and mem clock to 1200
ill try later

Just bios flash your card the new clocks then. thats what i did & powerplay still works. - make sure you have 'apply clocks at start up' unticked if your using afterburner to check clocks.

current clocks are at 157/300, I mainly just use afterburner for realtime temps the programs pretty lightweight & i have 4gb ram to boot anyway, might aswell make use of the bad boys.

you got those clocks WITHOUT having to tweak voltage??

i got 899/933 without tweaking voltage. 940/1180 was my single ref and i needed to tweak voltage for those.

ah so in all honesty this non ref card is probably one of the better ones off the line if im hitting 920/1200

oh for sure. 940/1200 is a good Oc on a ref with volt control. lucky you ;)

whoops - meant 920/1200 not 940

no you said 920,i was just saying 940/1200 as that is what many considered to be a 5850 oc that rivals 5870 in power (just not shader cores)

im gonna try make a push for 940 on the core. i think i tried it. but it didnt like it

If we're all talking about the same basic non-reference model Radeon HD 5850. Specifically mine is PN: 288-3E140-000SA, blue PCB with the centrally located fan 5 heatpipe cooler and you have adequate case airflow and a good stable power supply then I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to achieve those results. With a pencil mod or some other more permanent solution to increase the voltage to the 1.2-1.3 range you may be able to reach aprrox. 1000/1300 or better. Note, at that point you may need to add water cooling and aftermarket heatsink/fan solutions.$$$$$$$$$. Overall for the money I'd say this is definitely one of the best bangs for the money available (currently < $300.00 in US/CN). The main complaints about this model and other similar Radeon HD 5850 non-reference cards seem to be centered around a poorly programmed BIOS and powerplay's inability to adjust freqs on the fly as it was originally designed to do, resulting in flicker, screen tearing, and stutter during video playback. Obviously it's doable as we're all finding out a simple adjustment (300/575 seems to be a sweet spot)to the 2D clocks will fix most if not all of these issues. Why the mfr.'s continue doing this is beyond my comprehension. It has to of been the cause of thousands of RMA's and worse than that bad PR to the ATI brand. Are you listening AMD/ATI? No... didn't think so.:( You're currently the gameslayer king kong and you don't feel the need. Just don't forget:

" A slave stood behind the conqueror holding a golden crown and whispering in his ear a warning: that all glory is fleeting."

Note: I'm currently using a 2d clock modified (via RBE v125) version of the Sapphire HD 5870 BIOS (2010-4-13) available here:

my card seems to be changing profiles alright. I'l look into the pencil mod

Let us know how that works out for you. I can't imagine you'll get a huge increase but hey like slyfox2151 said you're not there 'til you smell the ozone.

basic pic of the pencil mod.... but im am new to Vmodding in general so I just pencil mod the 2points where it says 'pencil' mod' ???

Yeah you just shade that resistor... use a softer pencil, as they lay down graphite better. darker shades are more conductive.

I would look for some conductive ink, better than pencil, as the graphite will eventually fall off and your pencil mod will evenutally blow away (especially if you have a case with 5 120mm fans goin).

If you dont have conductive ink then put a piece of tape or a sticler over it.

I haven't used a good pencil mod since the 9600 Pro lol...

I dont think i will risk it. I dont have a multimeter & due to my inexperience in this field i dont know how much lead to pencil in & could end up killing the card -

after having RMA'd my 4870's 3 times since ive owned them within 2 years - I dont want to go back to the shop again & hand them my dead 5850 when they already dealt with my dead 4870 TWICE & gave me a kick ass deal on this 5850 when it turned out i didnt have enough cash, its just embarrassing & I dont want to be seen as taking advantage of their good will even though I do a fair amount of business with them, even more so when this card is less then 2weeks old. and Sapphire doesnt accept direct RMAs if the mod does go wrong.

so until there are clearer details regarding the mod i think i'l wait until this card is out of warranty before attempting to break it

probably a good idea... you're looking at bout a nother 90mhz or so, so 10% on core MAX, which will be like 7% in games, assuming there are no other bottlenecks in the system.

Honestly, drivers and other areas can be tapped into to gain speed... playing with ram timings might help - maybe a higher MHz with looser timings on the ram.

There's instructions for it on youtube, but there is no resistor to pencil. You have to make contact between 2 points over the PCB (and it won't stick).

Insulated wire and super glue sounds the order of the day :rockout: My Non reference HD 5850 with voltage control will do 930 outta box, 1000 @ 1.25V and 1035 @ 1.3V..... too scared to go any higher :(

that was the Vmod for the 5830 from what ive seen. unless you can put up a link.

would it be possible to get some pics please?? :toast::toast:

Sadly I did it once a long time ago, I think on an old 7900GT but it worked, I didn't mean that I had done the hard mod in my post above, my non ref card came out of the box with voltage adjustment, the linky below again is for a very old card but using the principle of the shielded wire and glue, they only used the glue on the memory mod, purely I think because it is less reliable than soldering and the impact on VMem is less. Take a look a few pics down.

I am assuming you know the points for your card? If not, it might be hard unless you have serious knowledge, have you checked out Xtreme's thread? Quite often they will help if you can give them some hi res pics............

You can always drop largon a PM in there, he is also a member here and knows his stuff, he is a good guy and I am sure, if he has time he would be willing to help, or at least advise if it's possible, he has helped me out before, shit he could mod a wind turbine to fart nitrogen :)
