I can't decide between these two combos

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80570E8500 - Retail for $311.98 - $20 rebate
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128358
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115036

or

ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80570E8400 - Retail for $249.98 - $15 rebate

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115037

It seems like the gigabyte MoBo is better and e8500 is faster. But is the combo of both of these worth $65 difference? Is the Asus MoBo good enough?

how about this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115037 -e8400 with
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182097 - 950W PSu combo for $270
$50 case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130159R - open box 750i SLI platinum -$99 << (great board i have it... they actually test the open box versions)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127361 - GTX 260 $199 after rebate
- Hard drive -$50
1 DVD drive - $25
XIgmatec s1283 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233003 - 35$

thats just over $700 and u can pick up a second gtx 260 down the line'

EDIT: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231145 - $55 for 4gb pc1000 ram << this will be a monster gaming rig it puts you actually about $80 bucks over tho :(. oh well i tried. Also the board is 'open box' usually open box is better than refurbished. e8400 is the same as e8500, you have the same chance of getting e0 stepping with both. Also processor speed difference is almost non-existant btw e8400 and e8500 (from 3 to 3.16 is what... 5%?)

dont mean to double post but you might find this useful:

Always buy refurbished. Theyre the same parts, theyve been tested, and you save hundreds of dollars.

Buy either $500 (that $580 rig is nice that you pieced) or $1000... you could get an awesome rig for $1000 with dual gtx 260's or a 4870X2 which would last you a while.

If you buy anything that is a reference design but has an "OC" or "XXX" sticker on it, and you're willing to pay $100 extra for that sticker, knee yourself in the face right now, because you jsut got ripped off hard.

$65 more for a video card is going to get you a lot further then $65 worth of cpu

What he said. An E0 8400 will do just fine.

Go for the first one. That is guaranteed to get you 4Ghz on air.

$700 - (Nearly £400), Right ?

If so - Check out my thread. I spent £400/$700 on mine and I dare say due to you living in the US - You can get parts cheaper.
