No pmw heatsink...
I think I should go full 890fx sb850 for future proofing
and stick with my 5000+ BE for now, 3.2ghz isn't too bad!
I already have 2x2gb ripjaws and a 60gb vortexII ssd on their way!

No such thing as futureproofing bro. You got Bulldozer coming out in a couple months that is going to require a new socket, but can run current AM3 procs on them.

Maybe go inexpensive now on board and pickup an am3+ 9 series chipset motherboard when they become available ...

On those grounds maybe I should be happy with my k9a2 (790x sb600) and just wait!!
Having said that I already 'waited' till after crimbo!
Will am3+ support triple ddr3 or will my double ripjaws be ok?

AM3+ is staying dual channel.

I guess the equation is something like bang/buck-(rma hassle)!
Also the bits I will have left are currently worth something, but in a year they won't!

GA-870a-UD3

Thanks again to you all for the input.

After reading every thing again and trawling for a few more hours I think I will go with..........

GA-870a-UD3 and get an MST-88 for the mosfets and a better northbridge cooler, should manage all that for under £100 leaving a little money for a Phenom II (45nm) x4 Black edition!!

Coupled up with vortexII ssd 60gb, 2x2gb ripjaws and an hd4850 it should be quite perky!!

I'll be ordering soon so if anyone has an further comments then please fire away!

So now it's processor choosing time.....
x2 or x4?
of course unlocked multiplier is always nice, but with an htt that will clear 300mhz it's not necessary.
What's the best chip for 4ghz+
Will 4 cores make a massive difference?
And I'm looking at changing my arctic freezer 64 for an HR-01

You already know how I feel about it. x2 555 and if it unlocks that's just a bonus.

I am not sure about the magical 4ghz number, but I think 3.6ghz Quad should be ideal and serve for a while.

I would suggest this cheap quad X4 840

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Phenom_II_X4_840/

Easy 3.6 Ghz with some decent cooling and good board. The X2 555 is only going to unlock to a Quad if you are lucky and if you want to take that gamble.

Either way both are good processors.

Also check out the X3 715 BE or X3 720BE.

my 2 cents.

I've also just bought an HR-01 for the CPU,
an HR-09s for mosfets
and an Evercool NCA-610 Serpent Chipset Cooler for the NB.
Thought I'd put my board and cpu savings to good use!!
Just ichin to get all the bits here now...
maybe I'll take some pics of the build and upload them here!!
I'll let you know my OC and if the cores unlock!! :D

I hear more 555 unlock and clock better than the 550. Most of the 550 are C2 revision which are hard to OC and don't unlock. The 555 are C3 revision which are awesome clockers. If you can cancel your order and change the CPU to a 555 black edition you got a easy 4Ghz CPU.

Don't unlock? Just google for it. I have a 550 C2 and unlocks with no problems; the only problem I see is that you cannot check the core temperature anymore.

All I am saying is more 555 unlock than 550.

Should I get 555 or 550....... I can change the order.

Go with 555.

I am not saying C2 revision is bad for OCing, I am saying C3 revision is easy for OCing.

Ofcourse unlock is pure luck.
