I did reinstall chipset drivers and updated them... no change. I have 2 1TB SSDs but they're mostly full of games and apps. I wouldn't want to wipe them. The only M2 drive I have is my OS drive, so I might just bite the bullet there. It's gonna end up being the motherboard and I'll just be pissed if I wipe another drive when I am just gonna have to reinstall Windows with the new Mobo anyway.
go to disc manger and see if you can't shrink that partition 60 or so gigabyte and then install the OS in the new volume.
once installed - go to the D partition (the old os) and run steam from there to install your games in the new OS.

BOOM. unless someone knows better than me - i am not a windows expert.

Have you got a spare PSU or cables to try? maybe PSU is the culprit and is not powering your GPU for some reason

That's the weird part. PSU is giving power. If I run Furmark.... it blasts it up to max wattage. Heats the system right up. Goes right up to 250 watts 100% power. if I run Prime95, I am getting 145 watts on the 10700k. So the PSU is rock solid. I've had zero crashes or issues running Prime95 or Furmark and blasting the system today.

Well... I just ran a bunch of windows scans and it repaired corrupted files.. got hopeful.. didn't change anything. It is especially bizarre that, in Rocket League menu... I am getting GPU load in the 60s... and it ramps up and holds good FPS, but then I go into an actual game and usage drops into the 30s and it runs like shit. This is so bizarre to me. The only way I can get decent usage is in game menus?

I ran this:
It found corrupted files and repaired them, I rebooted, and nothing changed.. same issue.

I am going to have to wait to reinstall windows. This is my only currently available work computer and I have a packed day tomorrow (still in WFH corona mode).

Alright! Crossing my fingers REALLY aggressively here, but Windows reinstall seems to have done the trick. Still have to reinstall a bunch of apps but was getting buttery smooth performance in games.

Just the original. I realized the extra RAM might not be 100% compatible. on the compatibility sheet on MSI's site it only shows 1/2 DIMM, not 4 DIMM as tested. So I'm just gonna not risk it at ALL :) If I want to upgrade to 32GB I'll sell this set of 2x8 and buy some 2x16.

Just check your bios and see what your pcie lanes are set to if it's on auto it might be worth manually setting it to pcie 3.0

Yup I had done that. didn't fix anything. I'll leave it as auto for now, was definitely working.

Old HDD? Big flash drive? anything with enough space to install windows hell you could even try Linux just get a clean os running to test.

I feel more justified to install windows on a small SSD now if anything like this happens just wiping a small drive and relocating libraries is no big issue.

Simple things can often be the last thing we try.
I've had 98mbps download on my fibre the last few days, was sure it was the ISP's fault. They came yesterday tested the lines then pointed out my network adapter was limited to 100mbps and left.
I spent half the day looking through settings and reinstalling drivers turns out my cat cable was damaged.

haha I have been there on the networking too. In this scenario, I just didn't want to have to just reinstall windows and all my apps for the last 5 hours... better than hardware issues though.

Either it was the gpu or OS as stated earlier. Dont run furmark again.

Sounds like a W10 Update fugged up your system (its why i wont run that dumpster fire OS)

It shouldn't be a problem, but yet it is. A restore point is necessary these days for Windows 10 (and most likely soon to be Windows 11) upgrades. The upgrades should not break things the way they do.

I do not recall, once, having to do a system restore using Windows XP or Windows 7, after an update was pushed out. I did have to do a system restore due to the girlfriend fucking clicking on every damn link that showed up on her email and installing some viruses back in the XP days....or when the wife was click happy with links on Facebook years ago while running Windows 7. But I never had to resort to a system restore due to upgrades pushed out, until Windows 10 (that is, if the update didn't outright break Windows so bad that you couldn't even repair it and had to clean install).

That's what you get for playing Microsoft Pay-to-test-new-OS game; windoze "10" and "11" included. But it's so cheap!

As a gamer I kinda just use Windows and live with it :) This is the first time I've ever had Windows literally just stop working with minimal hardware change.

Like I said earlier I run my os off a small SSD in the event of needing a fresh install, apps, games and programs are separated into another SSD so I only need 5 mins to link the relevant folders. Though I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for and windows has been a free os pretty much for the last 20+years for me.

Well I'm glad you fixed it but how many hours did that dumpster fire of OS as @eidairaman1 so eloquently put took from you just to add some RAM. Unacceptable.

Microsoft makes more than enough money on having literally everyone's data haha. They don't need people to pay for it. But yea, this is not a happy experience with their OS. I also have most of my apps/games on other SSD's, so I just had to reinstall small apps like 7zip, CCCleaner, etc. Didn't actually take too long. But it was really weird to have the OS break from literally sticking a couple bits of RAM in.

Very much not a fun experience haha.

Is it possible Windows installed some updates during that time you had to power down and power back up the computer after installing the RAM?

Even doing a system restore on Windows 10 once because it broke something with an update, didn't actually fix the issue for me. I had to clean install. I wouldn't put it past the fact that an update installed and just broke the hell out of something in Windows that you weren't aware of.

Is it possible Windows installed some updates during that time you had to power down and power back up the computer after installing the RAM?

Even doing a system restore on Windows 10 once because it broke something with an update, didn't actually fix the issue for me. I had to clean install. I wouldn't put it past the fact that an update installed and just broke the hell out of something in Windows that you weren't aware of.
yea possibly. I believe it was asking for a system restart but I can't remember. Too many restarts to count in the last 24 hours lol

That's what you get for playing Microsoft Pay-to-test-new-OS game; windoze "10" and "11" included. But it's so cheap!
8.0 and 8.1 are like that

Microsoft makes more than enough money on having literally everyone's data haha. They don't need people to pay for it. But yea, this is not a happy experience with their OS. I also have most of my apps/games on other SSD's, so I just had to reinstall small apps like 7zip, CCCleaner, etc. Didn't actually take too long. But it was really weird to have the OS break from literally sticking a couple bits of RAM in.

Very much not a fun experience haha.
Probably a update was downladed in background without your knowledge and borked it
