advises for upgrade

Hi,

I'd like to upgrade my PC. My goal is to have a "gaming" PC which will work for around 6 years. My last one still running and it's 8 years old ( P7 P55 D LE + I7 870k OC + GTX 460 cyclone) I will keep the case ( antec six hundred ) and the power supply ( MAXINPOWER ALIMENT 982VP 580W ).

So I'm waiting after new CG sales, to buy something like a 1070 or 1080. I hope it will be cheaper after this summer ...

My project is to buy :
- a new mother board, I always used ASUS and never been dessapointed ...
- a new CPU, I think I will stay with Intel ...
- a new CG, EVGA seems to be something strong
- new memory
- a new SSD PCIe

I will keep my old 840 samsung SSD 128go for storage.

I'd like to not be above 1000 euros. I'd like to play CIV V or VI, some FPS ( PUBG , Battlefields, Chivalery medival warfare ...) and a lot of others games, like mars surviving, or supreme commander

My questions are :

Will it be usefull to get a CPU with more than 4 cores ? Will the games be developped to use all of cores ? I'll bet on that ...
What kind of association do you advise me ? what is the most important thing I have to invest in ?

ATM I wish to get something performing to buy a 4K screen later ... and add a second CG to keep be on top for playing games in ultra ...

Your Budget is a little Optimistically Low for a predicted 6 year lifespan ( with out some future Upgrades price unknown)
as for cores start looking at the 6 to 8 core Cpu's as Software is becoming more Core aware ( more and faster cores)

You have included RAM and 16 gig DDR4 is going to be a serious consideration (its expensive at the moment)
and possibly a new Copy of Win 10

Yes I know it's optimistic =) But as I described my actual PC, I know performance will decrease with new games etc ... but a good PC at start and I'll be easy for some years =)

So at least 8 cores will not be useless ?

Try the 480 GB NVMe SSD from ADATA the SX8200 for £130...should be same in euro's...Very fast at 3200 Reads and 1700 Writes... 8700K is a must if you can get it into the budget. 1070ti GTX have really come down in price, now down to £400...and £450 for the cheapest 1080...

Cheapest Corsair Vengeance RAM is £150...

you don't rate a drive by its max sequential read/write. sx8200 is very mediocre for a nvme pci-e drive

risregard my comment, I was thinking of sx8000. Apparently sx8200 is pretty damn good, though wd black 2018 is still faster (even slightly faster than 970 evo).

For the price the ADATA SX8200 is great, its cheaper than the WD Black and pretty much any other NVMe out there and it has been reviewed very well. Yes in terms of performamnce its middle of the road, and there are many faster but of course more expensive so where cost is a concern, this is a very good option. More importantly, you wont on real terms feel the difference in performance versus the WD Black. I was only coming from a cost perspective.

Ooops, disregard my comment as I missed the rest of your comment on the SX8200!!!! my bad..yep the SX8200 is a good NVMe SSD

sx8200 or wd black 2018 or 970 evo, is there a big difference ? if you don't rate by R/W speed, how do you do it ?

frankly get yourself a 1tb of this and call it a day, you'll never feel the difference between this and a nvme drive (though the wd blue is m.2 sata not m.2 pci-e) unless all you do is move files with a stopwatch in your hands.

Not much difference at all....just the price as the performance is quiet close all around. Both the WD and Samsung are very good indeed but the ADATA just save you a bit more money to throw at your GPU/Motherboard or RAM..

I think you should either go for adata sx8200 or just stick to sata ssd
I would not replace my 850 pro with nvme even if I could trade for free.

You're all right. My first tough was to stay with simple ssd, but I'm still wondering if it really bring me something by pcie .... or at least in m2...

what is better now and in 5 years : i5-8600k + GTX 1080 or i7-8700k + GTX 1070 ?

Here you go, 955€: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/XN2MCb
This configuration will last for 5-6 years and will be excellent for both 1080p and 1440p gaming.

For gaming on 1080p resolution (1920x1080), you don't need anything beyond GTX 1060 gGB or RX 580 8 GB. For future-proof 1440p (2560x1440) gaming, consider GTX 1070 or Vega 56.

I would advise you to avoid buying 4K monitor unless you have money to match it with a proper system. Proper system for 4K monitor would be i7 7820X or i9 7900X or Ryzen Threadripper 1920X, minimum 32 GB RAM, minimum GTX 1080Ti or dual GTX 1070 or at least dual RX 580 8 GB...

Don't buy anything with a quad-core in this day and age.

For gaming on 1080p resolution (1920x1080), you don't need anything beyond GTX 1060 gGB or RX 580 8 GB.

Graphics technology doesn't stagnate , always buy the fastest card you can , even if you are not playing at higher resolutions.

Proper system for 4K monitor would be i7 7820X or i9 7900X or Ryzen Threadripper 1920X, minimum 32 GB RAM

That's so untrue and misleading. A Titan Xp is going to be the bottleneck at 4K/60fps even with a 1500X or an i5 and 8 GB of RAM.

I'm pretty sure that hardware I mentioned will be able to pull at least 50-60 FPS in pretty much every game on high or even highest possible settings. Bottleneck is a term which should not be taken seriously when your configuration "pulls" above 50-60 FPS.

I bought my top end 2700K CPU and supporting hardware at the back end of 2011 and it's still good today (see specs). The only thing that really needed upgrading was the graphics card, SSD, data HDDs and Windows version. The core of the PC is still good, if ageing somewhat.

I wouldn't buy intels 1151 socket now, it is end of the road for new processors on this platform. On the other side Amd with its AM4 platform willl be upgradable for a couple of years more. You can also get higher core processors with this platform. Dont buy Intel now, it is a bad buy imho.

Thank you all for answer me =)

It's very interesting, my opinion goes in the same way, I think it will be better for future to get 6 or 8 core.

About the 1151 socket, I agree too, and I'm wondering about 2066 ?

Thats not a problem because I will wait and see to buy a new PC. The goal will be to be in 4K later, so I will observe the new CG 1180, and its price, and decide after what CG will be better.
