AMD's next set of consumer desktop platforms, the high-end "Leo" and mainstream "Dorado" are what will bring together AMD's newest system components, including its next round of CPUs, next-generation graphics processors from the DirectX 11 compliant Evergreen family, and the 8-series platform core-logic (chipset) to drive it all. According to latest information pieced together by VR-Zone, AMD's newest chipset will arrive in two rounds of launches, ranging between April and May, 2010.

The two rounds are centric to the platforms they will belong to. On the northbridge front, the enthusiast and high-performance 890FX and 890GX hit retail with products based on it appearing in April 2010, accompanied by the high-end SB850 southbridge. The three will make up the chipset offerings for the Leo platform, which succeeds the current Dragon platform. Following these, the 880G northbridge, accompanied by the SB810 southbridge will make for product launches in May 2010. This pair makes up the mainstream Dorado platform that succeeds the current Pisces platform. The parts will have passed two stages of sampling by this November, and mass production commences in February and April. AMD's newest chipsets are bound to bring in new technologies such as SATA 6 Gb/s, USB 3.0, integrated MAC, and integrated clock generator, along with several other changes.

mmmm,SATA 6 GBb/s,USB 3.0,sounds good

Always fun to read about it i held out for a long time to get this and seen delay after delay. Got 790FX now and am just fine lol i know there are still a crap load of ppl waiting for it tho.

Very nice, eager to see these things.

Things update to fast :shadedshu

What is the difference bw FX and GX?

FX=designed for xtream OC platforms
GX=designed for mainstream/entry level machines with IGP like he said :P

not nesisarily had it come out the first time a year ago when it was supose to maybe lol but now we are going on 1 + x months so this will be kinda normal. a third wave of 790 boards came out when i saw that i coped a crosshair III. So at launch seems great but even so i may wait till 2nd wave of boards.

I like things updating like this...new chipset every 18 months or so...I got a new 790FX in January...it will be about time for the 850FX in May or so...:cool: A new build every year is awesome!!!

Sucks that I just got my ASUS Crosshair III Formula with the 790FX. Oh well, at least the next platform is still a good 8 months away. :)

The 890FX really won't bring too much of a performance gain anyways.

I'll admit I am an ATI fan. I really hope that this time around ATI/AMD can put together a very very solid platform that gives Intel/Nvidia a serious run for the money.

Who are these pretenders to the throne??!!
The King is dead, long live the King.

I guess that AMD's next socket (AM3+ or smth) will have a better upgrade path since it will have 800 chipset series AND probably the 900 series.

anyone know what the deal with these is?

Heres the answer ive been waiting sata 6 gbs and usb 3.0 also wats up with this cr8p with amd worshiping the "Thuban" Shatan or Satan proccesor and these new chipset called Dorado is a constellation in the southern sky, created in the sixteenth century and now one of the 88 modern constellations. Its name refers to the dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus), which is known as dorado in Spanish, although it has also been depicted as a swordfish in the past. Dorado is notable for containing most of the Large Magellanic Cloud, the remainder being in the constellation Mensa. The South Ecliptic Pole also lies within this constellation. Wierd Sh8t ahe makes me go :mad::mad: lol.

790FX was released back in 2007. Is a 2010 launch of 890FX "too fast"?

If anything its been a painfull wait for me just for usb 3.0 now they need to relase end off next year if not now for me PCIe 3.0 lol

FX= no IGP
GX = IGP (HD5200 most likely).

FX=designed for xtream OC platforms
GX=designed for mainstream/entry level machines with IGP like he said :P

and we can say it is
790FX=X48 , crossfire 16x@16 , tri crossfire 16x-16x-8x , quad 16x-16x-8x-8x
790GX=p45 , crossfire 8x@8x , tri crossfire 8x-8x-4x

i hope this is can beat X58 chipset

Damn and after I got my Asus ROG Crosshair 3. As was said, in 8 months, if I feel the need to get it, I probably will.

AMD would need some retail 6 core CPU's for that to happen.

maybe not only this , what about tri channel technology on x58 i hope AMD do something like it

anyone know what the deal with these is?

Most of the Ethernet logic is integrated into the chipset, with only a physical-layer chip (PHY) outside. Similar to NVIDIA MCPs. Currently AMD chipset motherboards use PCI-Express onboard NICs, which are a wee little bit more than PHYs.

The clock-generator chip will be integrated into the chipset. I don't know how this makes things any better, but maybe it's cheaper for motherboard makers that way.
