AMD Driver issue with Multi-monitor setup, apps jumping around and resizing or is it related to Windows 10/11? Nvidia drivers doesn't have this issue.

System: Asus Tuf gaming X570-Plus, Ryzen 9 3900x, MSI 5700XT Mech OC, 32GB Corsair DDR4 3200 ram connected to 3 x 1080P Monitors.
Monitor 1 - HP 23" - connected to DP1
Monitor 2 - Acer 25" - connected to DP2 (but Monitor doesn't have DP, so it is connected to HDMI using DP to HDMI cable)
Monitor 3 - Acer 23" - connected to HDMI
All monitors are 60 Hz refresh type.

Issue: If I update the graphics drivers that is released later than November 2020 (Radeon-Software-Adrenalin-2020-20.11.2-Win10-64Bit-Nov18) then Apps randomly rearrange after the Monitor resumes from sleep. On windows 10 it is horrible. I remote into my work laptop so I can get 3 monitors and the RDP session shrinks to 640 or so size window and all apps on my Laptop gets randomly rearranged. On Windows 11 if I use 'Remember window location' option then the apps stay (but AMD control center jumps around), RDP session still shrinks to a small window and sticks on top of one of the monitors. Every time this happens I can hear windows playing a device disconnected notification sound. I don't get time to play much games so never bothered to update the drivers to latest. Recently windows started to annoy by auto updating the drivers to newer one and AMD control center freaking out.

I tried completely on a new machine with fresh Windows 11 install and that machine behaves the same. So anytime I go back to November 2020 all behaves well.

I got so annoyed and bought a MSI RTX 4070 ventus 2x which is based on Nvidia graphics chip, installed the drivers and all issues went away. Reason why I went with this expensive option is to game occasionally with decent performance.

I have searched through lot of threads online suggesting Registry edits to hidden monitor delete/uninstall to DDU driver cleanup to even one third party software (which didn't do anything).

I have no need to be forced to buy a NVidia card just to resolve this annoying issue. 5700XT still has plenty of life and it still plays well.

Anybody has similar issues?

@W1zzard, have you seen this issue with any of your Multi-monitor testing. I might have contacted you few years ago with a similar issue and higher power usage with newer drivers after November 2020.

I have explained as best as possible.

Any help would save me $600 unnecessary expense (wife hasn't checked CC yet lol)

I'll give it to you straight, treat the Mrs. well, take her out for dinner in her favorite restaurant and make sure she doesn't look at your credit card bill.

I've heard of this problem many times before. This bug has been around for years. Might as well get used to it. They didn't care to get it fixed then and they definitely don't care now, major fixes for RDNA 1's chronic problems are unlikely to ever be developed at this point.

I only use my 3 monitors in Eyefinity setup, so cant say why you are haveing issues - but that do prefer windows 11 with my Ryzen setup - so again not sure but did you use win 11 pro?

This is an old driver issue which to the best of my knowledge was never fixed. Windows 11 may not be of much help here.

This eyefinity thing... Do they even call multi monitor setups that cringey marketing name these days?

So does this mean the newer 7x series AMD GPUs will not have this issue?

Haven't heard of this problem in a while so I assume not. I'm just perplexed this still occurs today.

I have never experienced any of these issues with any of my recent Radeons: neither the 290X nor the Vega 64. After resuming from sleep, everything is as it was. Sometimes GPU-Z reports erroneous readings like 700% fan speed, but restarting the application fixes that.

I've got a similar problem on Nvidia. It's putting the machine to sleep that triggers it for me, not just the monitors going to sleep. I've been told that it's using both HDMI and DP at the same time that triggers it. Something about the speed at which the different types reconnect, causing windows to (temporarily) think a monitor is missing then shift windows around so they don't become inaccessible.

I also see the resizing, but I'm pretty sure this is due to me using different dpi settings on the two monitors, and windows not being entirely consistent in the way it resizes windows as it shifts them back and forth between monitors.

Dunno if this is related or not to the problems you're having on the AMD side...

This can happen to any monitor/s. I've had it on my 3090 and G9 panel. First check whether you're running proper drivers for your monitors. This usually does the trick. Optionally you can edit the registry so it defaults to your res.

Scroll down to the registry bit...

I already tried the registry hack and no use

hmm other side was not green a while ago then

Thought so but how come when I switch to NVidia everything works or when I revert back to 3 year old drivers on the AMD card it works the way it should.

If you have Virtual Super Resolution enabled, disable it, and run both monitors at their native resolutions. Also, only play games at native res, not any higher or lower.

Actually theres a difference between Eyefinity and multimonitor setup - its the difference between haveing it work as one or multi screen setup with individual screens

Same issue here on both a 1070 and a 4080, have had it for many years across many drivers and Windows builds. Using HDMI along with either one or two DPs, setup has varied a bit. No adapters, no DPI scaling, no VSR, no GSync/Freesync, all displays at 60Hz.

Are the displays running at their own native resolutions and frequencies?

Yup. They're all 4k and all 60Hz, so that makes things a bit easier.

Must be some issue with either or both of the displays disconnecting in stand-by mode (just a thought).

I've never had this issue on AMD or on Nvidia, even with mixed GPU vendor setups using the iGPU for the second display.

If you have Virtual Super Resolution enabled, disable it, and run both monitors at their native resolutions. Also, only play games at native res, not any higher or lower.

Hooray for disabling more features to get basic functionality going. This is why Nvidia gets away with what they do.

Buy club 3D legit or other legit cables.

I had these issues at times too, but this fixed it.

My why.

The high bandwidth pushed through these cables for 4k and sometimes lower shows up the poor cross channel screaning on the cable, causing signal dropouts that cause asset reposition.

And DP to hdmi ?!? Shouldn't even exist, I have had three, none ever worked at all so your lucky but go active adapter or something.

Nope. VSR is equally useless at remembering window sizes and positions on Nvidia and AMD in my experience.

Yup. They're all 4k and all 60Hz, so that makes things a bit easier.
Another thought: is text and window layout scaling set to 100% in Windows? If not, that can also cause problems.

This can happen to any monitor/s. I've had it on my 3090 and G9 panel. First check whether you're running proper drivers for your monitors. This usually does the trick. Optionally you can edit the registry so it defaults to your res.

Scroll down to the registry bit...

In this example it looks like the OS can not read the EDID information from the monitor somehow , and therefore messes up the layout.
Using quality cables on initial install of the monitor sounds like good advice , so the correct monitor EDID information makes it into the OS.

Here is a utility to read information directly from your monitor: Monitor Asset Manager 2.9 a bit dated , but still usable.

Thanks for all your inputs. If DP to HDMI cable is faulty or if Monitor resolution, refresh and scaling is not set properlty, then how come a 3 year old driver works correctly on the card? Nothing changed except switch to Nvidia card and everything works the way it should.

My guess is there are these amazing 'I have a better idea' type developers who messed up this and try to act like they are fixing this (job security)

only 2 possibilities - Hardware had bug and got exposed with OS and driver updates or OS was updated and drivers never bothered to catch up.

Unfortunately I don't have newer generation AMD card to test it out (heck for the sake of curiosity I am getting a newer generation AMD card from MC)

Note: I also tested with older generation Nvidia 650 TI Boost with latest drivers and all works fine as it should. Only difference is the card doesn't have enough DP or HDMI outputs, so I have to use the DVI to DVI cable to connect to one of the monitors. I still used the DP to HDMI cable to connect one of the monitors and last one using HDMI.
