AMD Introduces Industry's First Sub-$100 Quad-Core Processor

i take it you missed the link a few posts up, to a news post here on TPU where it was done?

Yes, because it's just silly. :p

And because I don't have a SB 750 board and am insanely jealous (because I have a potentially unlockable chip).

i know that feeling, my media PC is SB700, woulda saved me some hassle if i could drop in a chip and unlock it.

In my country, smallest price I could find is 167$... there goes the industries' first...

Very nice, though I was hoping it would be based off the actual Athlon II with 1MB per core and not a Phenom II with only 512KB per core.

Release one clocked at 3.0GHz though, and I know what my next processor will be!

I might have found my next upgrade :toast:

Lowest price in the UK is £75 although Im hoping to wait a month or 2 and pick one up for £60ish, that will be nice :toast:

Oh wow, AMD's attack back at the core i5.

LOL omg this is just hilarious, me and my brother was just talking about this today. He was asking if there was a quad for $100 or less and i just laughed at him and said no sorry not yet.

And now this just proves me totally wrong  great timing i must say :toast:

Just wait till i tell him this in the morning :D

i get the feeling there wont be much room for overlocking and that means compared to a q8200 that overclocked to say 3ghz its not going to hold its own! altho if it runs cool could be good laptops

Actually shown two instances one clocked to 3.7 in the german review and one to 3.9 in the tweaktown review.

Okay.
So you actually did not cherry pick your chip before you buy them?

we (serbia) only got 5 pcs a week ago and ive got one of those.

Maybe on the older chips, but not on the new ones:

In fact, some of the early Athlon II X4 engineering samples that are currently floating around are actually 258mm2 Denebs cores with the L3 cache disabled and not true 169mm2 Propus cores. Some users who have gotten their hands on these chips have even claimed to have been able to unlock the L3 cache. However, if you have hopes of doing the same, you'll have to hurry as all future Athlon II X4 stock will be made from Propus cores with the L3 cache physically removed.

AMD Athlon II X4 Debut: Enter The $99 Quad-Core

You can't enable it if it doesn't exist....

Come on -- I've sure you've got more than that.

You dont know what its like living in a technological wasteland where "gamers" still have geforce 5 series cards

trust me when i saw the processor listed i thought it was a typing error or something else.
i have X3 720 but i wanted to unlock L3 on this quad. it would be like 945 downclocked to 2,6GHz.
I am suprised that we even got it before USA, cmon Serbia is the last dump for IT and everything else involving IT. ok maybe Albania is last.

Yeah... you'd be amazed as to the different places I've lived in my life.

I've got family that's still forced to use 56k modems as their main source of gaming. And no, I'm not talking about older relatives, either.

Wow, for the price that is damn awesome. Ive been wanting to build a media pc for some time now, because let's face it, you can never have enough pc hardware or pcs in your home. I love my PS3 and all, but Id love to watch movies on my 50" plasma in the living room than my 32" LCD in my bedroom. With the costs of 785G boards, this proc, and a nice Bluray burner (or combo dvd burner, bluray reader) this shouldnt be bad at all.

You can watch movies on your TV already using the ps3. Download and install a program called PS3 Media server. It even transcodes files that the ps3 can't play natively.

damn. Talk about bang for you buck. That and 785G is great. Way to go AMD

The 620 is now on newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103706

Saddly, it isn't under $100, but I'm sure that is just because it is new.

The Phenom 9600 has been selling for under $100 for some time now, I've seen it on newegg as low as $85. Though it has been sold out a lot recently, probably because they were clearing stock for this.

I think the issue is that his PS3 is on the 32" in the bedroom, and he wants to watch movies on the 50" in the living room.

Even still, I think a $299 PS3 would still be a better/cheaper option to get movies on the TC that doesn't have a PS3 current attached.

Tweaktown did a review on it and they seemed to love it.

I really could see grabbing one of those over the 955 I have now.. just to play a little more with.. lol

It's funny how the 620 was just announced, but the people who unlocked the L3 were using a 620 before it was out by over a half a month and no one seem to have caught that from the CPU-Z screen.

I'm sure AMD will intentionally throw a few Deneb quads with disabled L3 and mix it with the new Propus core, just to create a hype. Either way they reached the magic number ($99) and with some luck they will get a few percent market share from Intel. I sincerely doubt they are aiming at i5 or even q8200 with this, just like Deneb was not aimed at i7- the price of MoBo+CPU is under $200 and will place it in the Core2Duo range, which is dead anyways, and i3, which is not out yet.

Wow this beats the X3 720 in just about all benchmarks!
