Maybe I'm weird but I just don't understand how any of these $900-1200 cards make any sense to purchase. If I'm going to be spending four figures (or just shy of it) on a graphics card, I want the best. And none of these are the best - the 4090 trounces them.

I either want the best, or I want some value, and these cards exist in a no-man's land for me. Where are the great new GPUs between $500-700? Nowhere in sight. Both AMD and Nvidia refusing to move the needle on performance in what was historically the high end pricing tier.

QFT --. This is exactly how the majority of the market feels IMO - If I'm gonna drop $1000-1300, I'm not going to want to sacrifice. Otherwise I'm getting a $550 6800xt with 3 games and calling it a day.

Both of these need a 20% price cut to make any sense.

For me the card would be fine if it was consistent, but it is not and its all over the place. Some people have been burned where AMD never fixes the issues. in the 6k series AMD fixed the issues but why cant they get it right, every year AMD has issues at 1k we should at least get a consistent card.

That's valid criticism. A premium-priced product should also be of premium quality.

The fact that there are only two (three with Intel) companies left which can design GPUs with the current performance shows how complex it has become, so "getting it right every year" might not be as easy as it sounds. I hope AMD can again deliver some "fine wine TM" and improve consistency over all games / applications with driver updates.

Look at how close the 7900 XT is to 6950 XT 126 vs 113 is literally the same performance.

And that's a stock 6950XT... if you spend some time tuning the thing you could easily squeeze another 6-7% out of it, even more with a high end board partner model. My 6950XT OCF can sustain 2.7-2.75GHz on the core and 2.35GHz on the memory. And I snagged that thing for a relatively low $730 after rebate on black friday. Haven't done any solid testing but I'd imagine it just about 1:1's a 7900XT in raster. Definitely not AMD's best showing...

From what I could see and understand from the review, AMD have really made a decent card.

Yes drivers seem to have a bit of an issue when it comes to wattage when its watching a video or something but meh, that will get sorted I'm sure For the cost, looks and everything else, I'd glad have an aftermarket card

Both good and bad for me. The power usage is surprising as I thought the 7900XTX would be far more effecient and at the same time was hoping for a bit more of a beating given to the 4080 so that Nvidia would have no choice but to drop prices...Hopefully Nvidia will drop prices but I fear it will be just a small one. Overall though the 7900XTX had done well on the RT side by getting to the 3090/Ti level which is not bad at all. The 7900XT though is a bust and I just cannot understand why it was priced $100 less other than to take a leaf out of Nvidia's play book. Just pay the $100 more for the XTX.

Bottom line, these are still too expensive as the 7900XTX should have been no more than $899 and the 7900XT at $759. The 4080 also should have been no more than $899 and that is still taking the you know what...

That can be fixed easily, stop giving nvidia money, regardless of what they have to offer. This is the sh!t, people want AMD to produce a 4090 killer, but offer it at US$500, just so Nvidia is "forced" to cut prices so the rabid followers would still give nvidia their money.

Those are not "unique features", they are "lock-in features" which I have always avoided instead of desiring them.

The amount of games that support RT are simply minuscule compared to the immense library of games (that many of us haven't played yet) that don't have it, neither need it.

Talking about the ones that have it, very, very few of the games that have RT, gives you the visual reward that is supposed to have, but at an insane performance hit.

Anyways, AMD should rename the 7900 XT to 7800 XT and both GPUS (7900 XT and XTX) should be priced lower, but then again, it seems that nobody really complains as to how much the 3090Ti and 4090 MSRPs were, so why not ask for the moon at this point?

We want AMD to have ANYTHING to compete with 4090, same price, this way we will win because of competition, NVidia will have to drop the price of 4090 and release a 4090 Ti with full chip unlocked for a 1600 price, AMD will do the same etc, but at this moment AMD has nada, zip, zero because their engineers couldn't compete with those from NVidia.

reminds me of the fury and the subsequent vega cards. when you downclocked a vega 64 card to fury x clock speeds, the performance was identical.

If AMD's recent history is anything to go by, then we can expect two things:
1 - FineWine™ will make both 7900s a bit better, especially that low load power consumption;
2 - The chiplet design will improve in two generations time, one at the earliest (see the jump from Ryzen 1000 to 3000 series).

Well while its a good product i dont think the 200
difference will sway people from buying the 4080 its closer in performance than i thought it would be to the xtx and has the superior feature set and better ray tracing. When your spending $1000 whats $200 more. I still think its a great gpu but the xt is a dud it should’ve been $200 cheaper or more.

What you consider the best or having some value is subjective.

I get what you're saying, but I don't fully agree. The GPU market has been pretty consistent for 10 years that high end GPUs are available between $500-700. GPUs costing $1k+ have always been premium products with sky high pricing only justified by the fact that they were the best. Until now, no company has tried to sell a value proposition north of $800. This is the first time we have ever seen companies try to release $1000 graphics cards that are solidly second tier products.

So, I think there are objective criteria by which we can say "these products make zero sense to purchase". The only way these products make sense is if you are willing to agree with Nvidia and AMD that the crypto-pandemic GPU price explosion has set a new normal for the graphics card market.

I do not agree. Consoles are not exploding in price. CPUs are not exploding in price. The Steam Deck is not exploding in price. Only graphics cards (and motherboards, sort of). And it's objectively nonsensical. I understand that some people will make subjective purchasing decisions and be happy with these products, and good for them - buy what you want and enjoy it.

But second tier GPUs have no business being this expensive. AMD and Nvidia could almost certainly sell these products around $700-800 and turn a profit. They just don't want to, and they're betting there are enough consumers willing to accept the "new normal" that they will be able to sell product at a historically ridiculous price level. They might be right, but that doesn't make it suddenly true that there is value in these purchases.

I expect RDNA 3 will be sitting on shelves the same way the 4080 is sitting on shelves.

As for everyone complaining about Ray Tracing performance. In all seriousness I want to know if people are seriously using the tech in the small list of games it supports.

That's not really the point of the complaints. AMD claimed that RDNA3 will have improved RT performance vs. 6000 series, but it ended up being the same.

I'd say, why is the 4090 so damn fast? That's a helluva card (too pricey for me) and was always going to be a reach for AMD to catch it.

This. RDNA3 is fine, its just priced too high.

Same applies to Nvidia.

As for early hardware behaviour like high idle tdp and that high peak clocking after which it quickly drops 200mhz... that looks fixable and its likely there is some perf left on the table especially in relation to its voltage under load vs fan speed vs temp hotspot only at 74ish degrees... and gpu at 58c. Thats extremely low!

Idle usage is obv related to MCM. This is just new territory and memory or core might not clock down agressively enough. Not exciting or new imho Could it have been more refined though from launch.. I certainly think they should have. First impressions matter.

Sorry I got my 6800xt when they were $1400 in Canada. If you don't remember. Yes they are expensive but that does not mean they are not worth it. It doesn't matter what you say anyway I will be buying a card regardless. Complaining about an AMD card's performance on a day one review should always have the caveat that based on history this card will be faster in 2 years than it is today and more efficient too.
