Anime Nation

Can anyone recommend some more recent anime that is the psychological thriller genre? Anything similar to Lain, Texhnolyze, Ergo Proxy, Gantz, etc.

I am also looking for more slice of life stuff I haven't seen, and any anime that supports HDR as I just got a new Raspberry Pi 5 and put LibreElec on it... So I want to watch anime in HDR on my 77" CX OLED.

Have you seen Summer time rendering ?
Or the apothecary diaries?

Seen neither. Will check them out. Thanks.

Summertime Rendering as a psychological violent show perhaps?

Starts off with some sex jokes but it gets into thriller / action primarily but with a solid psychological angle. It's not primarily psychological but it's from this decade.

-------------

Spice and Wolf is stressful money in Medieval Europe. But it's actually got a lot of slice of life elements as they travel, eat and just swap stories on the road. There's a recent remake with new animation.

Do you want slice of life or do you want Iyasheki/Healing? The two genres are often confused for each other.

Alright, I'll check out Summertime Rendering.

I have seen the original Spice and Wolf 3 times over... I would probably not like the remake because remakes. Same with seeing all of Urusei Yatsura (80s original) and they remade it a few years back, I am actually interested in that one.

Slice of Life I mean shows like Non Non Biyori, The Day I Became a God, Sangatsu no Raion, possibly Haibane Renmei, Eden of the East, Honey and Clover, maybe romance like Kimaguri Orange Road or Maison Ikkoku... Just to name a few.

Feel free to recommend (good) Isekai shows too. I've seen most of the popular ones.

Im a Spider, so what?! Is a good boss rush Isekai with a few intelligent twists. Definitely deserves more love.

Reincarnated as a Sword is higher quality than most.

Zenshu is probably the best damn thing I've seen in 3 years.

unless you watch blurays you won't find much native HDR content but if you have a PC with a RTX3050 or newer you can use emoose "MPC-VR RTX HDR" on github with MPC-HC. it will HDRify most anime reasonably well.

Will look into all of those, especially Zenshu if you rate it so highly.

I see. Sometimes when I "procure" anime I see 10-bit listed which I believe is HDR. My birthday was last Thursday and my fiance got me a Raspberry Pi 5, I have LibreElec and Kodi on it, It is capable of 4K 60fps HDR, so anything you can recommend, I just want to take advantage of my new hardware.

Still want recommendations on the psychological thriller genre.

Seen Sonny Boy twice over and loved it. Watched once by myself, again with fiance and Mom. Might have even watched it with my younger brother.

Great recommendation but I've seen it. Down for anything similar though.

to be HDR it needs to use the REC2020 or newer colorspace and have extra data for contrast/brightness going upto 600nits for OLED and 1000nits for LCD. most 10bit files you see online still use the old rec709 colorspace. they just use 10bit to reduce color banding during compression. as for anime recommendations you might want to try "Hell Teacher: Jigoku Sensei Nube" .

Been binging through Zoids Chaotic Century with japanese audio + uncut and subtitles that semi matches with the english dub, I have only watched it in english when it came out on TV.
Going by my listening skills while watching anime you can sort of pick up certain words and I have to say the english dub did a really good job in dubbing the anime.
The cut out scenes in different episodes, some kind of make sense why they would cut it out but others don't, I mean its ok to let them show scenes of them shooting the gun and keep gun shot sounds. But its not ok to show the gun pointing at the characters or show them tied up in a rope in certain angles?
Very bizarre choice from the english studio.

Well.... How about something very different? Lol

Apocalypse Hotel was the dark horse best anime from last season. It doesn't have enough buzz. It's dramatic in the first episode but pivots into dramatic-comedy.

I'd say Apocalypse Hotel is as 'smart' as Sonny Boy but with a rather cartoon sense of humor. Like if you got those self-reflection and psychological scenes in Sonny Boy but with Robots who aren't capable of understanding the feelings they have (to the point of absurdist comedy levels).

If Gundam Seed Freedom was to go by success, they should do another movie for Gundam Wing.
