Annoying behaviour at WinXP startup

Hell-o.

Every time Windows (XP, SP2, all recent updates relevant to my usage installed) boots up on my main system, a window pops up (or rather: is already maximized). It's the "my computer" window, if that's what it's called on english windows versions(?). The very thing that contains all drives and "my documents".

I am rather puritanical if it comes to desktops: there are no icons whatsoever on my desktop (this can be enabled with TweakXP or other such utilities). It's eben more annoying if the system boots up to a clean, empty desktop and WHACK there's a (never used) window popping up! :shadedshu

There are no registry entries in the "run" or "run once" menues or "autostart" menu entries linked to that phenomenon. Any tips how to permanently kill this window behaviour at startup?

Hmm. Thats odd. Try running "Hijackthis" It will show all the registry entries that load at startup, even the ones that are not in the places you mentioned, I believe. Perhaps you can see what is doing it then. Just be careful what you delete.

Sorry - my fault. I should have mentioned that this happens even on a clean, new install - turn off desktop icons, get a "my computer" popup. That's my impression at least.
So I am looking rather for a workaround for that noisome popup problem that expecting unwanted guests on my HD.

I guess I'm not the only user out there who thinks "why tolerate icons on your beautiful wallpaper if all those links are (and better sorted) under Start/programs/... anyway" - true?

i think the tweak u a have used to get rid of the my computer icon/shortcut.. has simply swopped the shortcut icon for an open version of my computer..

in short it hasnt worked.. there are certain desktop icons windows just dosnt like u getting rid of..

maybe run msconfig...lol. But if you right click the taskbar, go to properties, and search around a bit (sorry you're on your own from this point ), maybe there will be something in the options menu for wheter my computer pops up on startup. either that or...you have spyware issues? lol

amusing really but i am the other way round.. i run a plain black desktop cos i dont like pretty pictures making my desktop icons hard ro read.. he he

i only have the two windows one left on it thow the bin and and the my computer one i have swopped to open windows explorer.. which i use a lot..

i also have my taskbar thingy at the top instead of the bottom.. he he..

You, trog, are closer to the issue than zekrahminator... might be that this is after all a windows "feature", to "help" users who might otherwise bother M$ they don't get back to "my computer"... i really never knew what the "my computer" was for anyway, i use xplorer2 (one cool piece of shareware) for all file management purposes.

Is there (I am TRYING to at least find a workaround) a way to have windows that you can't help popping up at least load MINIMIZED to the tray?

My desktop wallpaper is almost all black, by the way - it's not that I do not want to spoil a Rembrandt on my background, I just like a clean workspace and do not need icons. I have many many links and to display them without satisfying order side by side is no option for me.

i could get mine down to just two icons.. the my computer which i have never used thats swopped to explorer.. and the bin..

i have mine set to use classic view.. classic everything.. it looks pretty much like my windows 95 did several years back.. the first thing i do when changing up is to try and make everything look as much like the old one as i can.. i only ever change up when the amount of new stuff that wont work on the old one gets annoying..

u can make those icons smaller or bigger.. i dont think u can get that open my computer window any different thow.. only by going back to the icon.. another trick is to have a folder on your desktop where u can put as many shortcuts in as u want..

when set on "show details" they are a lot easier to find than a bunch of icon on your desktop.. i have just too much software on my machine to use the programs thing every time.. i need some way at getting at stuff i use often..

ps.. boruvka.. what the difference between explorer2 and the explorer.exe that comes with windows.. ??

Xplorer2 is a highly configurable file manager, offering many more options and tools compared to the windows explorer.

Look at the "Feature comparison table" way down on the page linked to above it's fast, has better preview features and multiple windows to push files to and fro with ease... I just like it. It's like a bastard son of the windows explorer and good ole' Norton Commander.
