Intel is apparently taking its GPU business seriously, at the expense of AMD, as according to an article from CRN, Intel has hired Vineet Goel, former Corporate Vice President GPU architecture, graphics, machine learning and mobile platform at AMD. His new title at Intel is almost as longwinding, as he joined Intel as Vice President and General Manager, GPU architecture and IP engineering.

Goel spent his past five years at AMD and prior to that he was the Director of GPU compute solution and Adreno architecture at Qualcomm, although his first job listed on LinkedIn was as a fellow at AMD. His new position at Intel will have him lead the Xe GPU IP roadmap, or in other words, he'll be the person that decides what kind of tech Intel will be putting in its future GPUs.

You know, It really wouldn't surprise me if AMD just sell their GPU division to Intel, one day.

I suspect AMD would far prefer to just concentrate on CPU's.

It’s a curious thing when these folks move from one company to another. I’m sure they have some sort of NDA clause in the contract with the company they left, and it typically takes a few years to go from concept to finished product anyway. Then there’s the whole “figure out your new boss” and cultural integration time period that comes at any mega corp. I wonder when these types of moves start to bear fruit?

AMD would most likely not exist today if they hadn't bought ATI.

Probably failed in the bold part of his title at AMD, so AMD let him go.

same goes to nvidia buying 3dfx
Different times, but I'm sure they got some good engineers from there at the time.
AMD was in a very different situation when they bough ATI.

Well, to be honest, with probably a trippled salary the guy had little to think about.

Yeah which Cards can i get here till 250€ from AMD hmmm:
RX 550 2GB 130€
RX 550 4GB 240€

On the Other Hand in this Times i can get a:
GT 1030 GDDR5 90€
GTX 1050TI 160€
GTX 1650 230€

AMD have atm nothing to sell in the Low - Mid price range

Intel needs to do it as they have no experienced people in house. AMD has an established division, i doubt one person makes that much difference.

There is nothing new in low end market anyway. And probably where will never be in the future. Companies target over $250-$300 market with latest gen of graphics cards. Last chance to buy something good and cheap was when RX 580 8GB was selling for $150 or less. If you are still with the IGP, just try to find a second hand option at a not so ridiculous price. That CPU will bottleneck about everything anyway.

from AMD to intel today, the next day from Nvidia to AMD then someone from intel to AMD

This is just Intel deep pockets in working. I wonder how long it will take to start snatching some Nvidia people also or does Jensen have them on a leash?

AMD still need a graphic division. Almost consumer GPU all CPU have iGPU. It's crucial that every CPU manufacturer these days have a Graphic IP. And it's better if it's a competing one.

AMD will not sell their graphic division since it help them to get many contract like Playstation and Xbox.

Na i enjoy to play with my IGP mostly Indies (but sometimes Hitman 2 and No Mans Sky) :)

Settings run Smooth for an IGP with 30 FPS:
Hitman 2 on Medium 800p, Textures MAX OUT (7,6GB RAM for IGP)
No Mans Sky on Standard - Medium 800p, Textures High ( 8,1GB RAM for IGP)

There is no reason to buy a Card with a lower amount of 8GB GPU RAM

Just for trolling Minecraft 60 FPS with High Res Texture Mods and the IGP take in 900p 14GB RAM for IGP :nutkick:

Without ATI, Amd wouldnt exist anymore:)

Exactly. It's a small market with few key people so it pays to be one of them.

If that engineer is already an unemployed former AMD employee how come Intel is taking its GPU business seriously at the expense of AMD?

230€ for 1650 and 160€ for 1050Ti? A year ago, maybe.

350€ minimum for 1650, single 1050 Ti for €270.

Get real.

Since he was hired while still at AMD by the looks of things, so AMD lost what appears to have been a pretty key employee.

Executives come and go. They usually are brought in for key purposes, and when that is done, they often move on for new challenges. AMD losing engineers closer to the actual projects is probably a much bigger deal, but no doubt they account for this turnover as much as they account for securing their IP. An executive leaving the company is always a very real possibility in any highly competitive industry.

Edit: What we don’t know is how much of this poaching is prevented. One can get a job offer and use it as leverage for a raise or a promotion in their existing company. I’ve been around long enough in my job to see key people retained in this way, and sometimes people who appeared to be key not get any such offer and are cut loose with a congratulatory handshake. Granted, you can’t always keep everyone you want, and we won’t really ever know which is true, but do you really think this attempt at poaching doesn’t happen all the time? These companies likely have the best players in the industry, so I imagine there are talks going all the time.

Well back in those days, there was all this ruckus about AMD overpaid to but ATI. Hence the reason why they had to sell everything shortly after. But in the long run it paid off.

It paid off cause Phenoms didn't make a dent and Bulldozer sucked. Thus Radeon side of the business was doing the heavy lifting of generating revenue.
