Another RX580 vBIOS request please

Hi folks,
I emailed Sapphire some time ago about getting the vBIOS for an RX580 but got precisely no response at all, so for my second 580 I thought I'd ask here.

This is GPU-Z's main screen:
GPU-Z main window.gif

And the memory timings (two overlapping screenshots as they wouldn't fit my screen all at once):
GPU-Z memory timings1.gif

GPU-Z memory timings2.gif

The GPU seems to be running okay but has a core clock of 1200, which it never exceeds under load. I'm guessing this card was used for mining?

I got it from an ebay seller - they didn't say 'never used for mining' etc., but I'd like to get the stock vBIOSes for it if possible.

Here's the white sticker:

Thanks for any help or insights!

Being a nitro there should be a bios switch either on the edge closest to you when looking at the case (near the pci bracket or near pcie power connectors or on the front of the card ( opposite end of the vid outputs).

Sapphire cards came with a Gaming bios and a compute bios. That tells me the card is in compute mode.

You have hynix mjr ram

From your specs that card has a dual bios switch.

Thanks for responding. Yeah, there is. Unfortunately it loads an identical vBIOS, both set 1200 as the clock speed. Should be 1430, I think?

When I went through the database there were two for Samsung/Hynix, with 1430 clocks - at least one ought to be right? But beyond that how do I find the 'slow/cool' vBIOS to go with it?

Cheers

Ok i found a bios where the GOP UEFi code was updated internally.

Use this bios to flash.

Get AMDVBFLASH 2.93 from following this link here.

Once you have the tool.

Follow these steps carefully:

1. Open your "C:" drive in Windows, create a new folder, call it atiflash.

2. Extract the contents of atiflash_293.zip to the "C:\atiflash" folder

3. Find the bios file you downloaded and rename the bios file to biosname.rom

(Biosname.rom is just an example, change it to match your card model in 5 characters with .rom on end)

4. Move biosname.rom to the "C:\atiflash" folder

5. Open the start menu, type cmd, when cmd.exe appears right click it and hit "Run as administrator"

6. At the command prompt type in cd\ and press enter until only C:\> is on the screen.

7. Type in cd/atiflash and press enter, you should see C:\atiflash>

8. At the C:\atiflash> prompt type in
amdvbflash.exe -unlockrom 0
(there is a space between the e and -unlockrom and 0)(0 is the number zero)
press enter and you will be prompted that the "ROM Unlocked"

9. At the C:\atiflash> prompt type in
amdvbflash.exe -f -p 0 biosname.rom
(there is a space between the .exe and -f, and a space between -f and -p and 0)press enter.

Follow directions on screen and if flash is successful exit the command prompt and restart, windows should show up on screen.

Thanks, will do that in the morning (it's late here now). Cheers

Hi, am just getting onto this now.

Does it matter that my card has Hynix RAM, and the vBIOS you linked to says Micron?

Cheers

Okay - the 170511 one works okay, now the card reports:

GPU-Z BIOS 2 inwards.gif

I think this looks okay? (I accidentally flashed the in-towards-the-motherboard switch position, so I might have to swap that over later).

Just need a quiet BIOS, or I might simply leave it on this one.

I found a 1411MHz 'quiet' BIOS in another thread and that works fine too.

That leaves me with 1430/2100 and 1411/2000

All good, I think!

@eidairaman1 Thanks again for your help

Don't worry about the bios switch position. You are all set.

Enjoy the card

As a suggestion, I would replace the thermal paste and pads for such an old card, make sure to match up the thickness of pads and get a good pasted designed for direct die contact.

Absolutely, that's next on the list.

I repasted my other 580 and my 570 itx about a year ago and it made a heck of a difference - quieter and cooler. More than I expected.

This 580SE came from the 'Bay and I can see right away it needs a bit of TLC.

Well, gave the card a cleanup. Eeew. Dust, pet hair. And the previous owner hadn't taken off the plastic films that cover the metallic parts on the shroud and the fans.

Card looks loads better. Will do re-pasting later once I've sourced the pads etc.

One odd thing has come up though: in the motherboard BIOS the card info says "Select a valid GPU", and of course if I disable CSM, windows won't boot due to no recognised video card.

I've re-flashed the motherboard BIOS, cleaned out (DDU) the chipset and graphics drivers, re-installed them but no change.

The card is otherwise working fine, so it's okay, just a bit odd (I don't intend to go to Windows 11 on this machine).

Googling says the card may be faulty - but it seems fine under CSM.

Any ideas?

I've emailed Sapphire and they actually responded this time, and asked me to supply them the VBIOS the card came with (1200/2100) - maybe they'll give me a better VBIOS? The one I'm currently using is from the TPU Verified list, which ought to be okay?

Make sure your motherboard bios is updated, and sad enough sapphire didnt get enough complaints about that bios of yours being troublesome. I do know that there are newer 1411 bios with hynix mjr ram

Start with White sticker pics located on the card, and a GPU-Z Screenshot, and click the Advanced tab-click the v and select memory timings and screenshot that.

Hey, I just got an email from Sapphire, says the original VBIOSes are attached.

Am not at the PC right now. Will post back later.

The VBIOSes that Sapphire sent me are attached as a .zip.

Per their instructions, the 'quiet' one goes on the left switch position - i.e. closest to the IO shield - and the default/fast one on the right switch position.

As you'll see, the quiet one is 1340MHz and the default / fast one is 1430MHz (I had the quiet as 1411 from a VBIOS for an RX580 8GB normal edition)

The issue I had with no-booting-without-CSM, due to the GOP not being recognised, is an issue with my Asus motherboard (an X470 Prime), not the card, which gets recognised properly in an ASRock B450M Steel Legend. Which means the TPU VBIOS I had previously was fine.

Anyway, all's well that ends well. Kudos to Sapphire for getting back to me to help with a 5 year old card that I only bought second hand.

Glad its resolved but strange enough the B450 chipset came out after the RX580 series was launched so the mobo bios should of recognized the hardware right off the back. I'd report your issue to Asus.

I built a rig with a B550 steel Legend and am using a XFX Radeon R7 250X Ghost card in it (has UEFI bios) and had no issues booting it first time.

Yeah, it's a weird one. I also put a 570 Pulse ITX in, and that wasn't recognised by the Asus X470 either. Both cards are fine in the Steel Legend board.

I tried to flash the Asus back to an earlier BIOS but it refused ('not a proper BIOS' error).

I'll fire Asus an email.

Bit of an update.

Firstly, Asus have taken this to 2nd line support (maybe 3rd), and are testing the issue.

Secondly, I read about removing and re-installing keys for secure boot, so tried that.

It wouldn't work until I booted from the UEFI mode USB stick that I used to install Windows - then I could remove Windows Boot Manager from the boot list, re-install the secure boot keys, turn off CSM and reboot okay.

After that, I could add Windows Boot Manager back, remove the USB stick and boot into Windows on the nvme drive, as usual.

However, the BIOS still reports an anonymous AMD card, with 'no GOP driver', even though it boots in UEFI mode +/- secure boot. So something's not right.

Will report back what Asus come up with.

Spoke too soon. Powered on today after the power had been off to the whole house and it hangs like before.

Have had to clear CMOS and switch CSM back on (doesn't seem to make a whole lot of difference, TBH, but...).

Over to Asus then.

Just a - probably final - update: it has now been nearly 2 months since I contacted Asus support and they haven' got back to me. So I guess they're not going to bother. If they do, I'll post back but I'm not holding my breath.
