I've seen these PSU's that look good for the money. It's to power a 4870, e6550, 1 hdd, 1 dvd and some micro atx asus mobo (nothing oc'd).

They maybe okayish but who knows what kind of results you get from a generic brand.
I would still at least try and get the corsair 400w.
If not that titan 650w would be your best bet.

I understand tht the economy is in a bad shape and our pockets are tight. But
Trust me. Investing in a good brand PSU is worth it. Its what powers all your components. It has got the power to even screw them up.

So I would go for a decent Corsair or Zalman. I have personally owned these and never regretted.

I would look in the features for Active PFC and overvolatge and undervoltage protection.

The psu is probably for a friend and his probably on tight budget,the best one would be the 400w corsair.

Wouldn't trust any of them TBH. I'd go for the Corsair VX 550, I have one running my secondary rig with an E6600 and 3870 and its great, quiet and stable. 400w is a bit low for a 4870, the recommended is 500w (and yes, I know they overestimate reqs, but the greater the margin the quieter and more efficient it will run)

A good psu will last for years, often outliving all other parts except the case, the last thing you should skimp on is the psu. A bad psu however can bring your whole rig down with you.

I can get that 400w cheap from ocuk. It's only 400w, won't that be a problem? Also, i've just checked on their website. Isn't that a bit expensive for a 400w psu with 30a on the 12v rail?

Ebuyers "own" stuff is actually okay, got one of these behinds me they run nice and cool, voltages are acceptable and the series has more positive reviews then some of the brand name stuff.


Would not recommend for a over clocked system though, that tends to be where these cheap psus fall short.

Got to agree with that.

Also look for a PSU with more than 1 PCI-E and 1 SATA connection, as some of those mentioned above only have the one.
You may want to upgrade in the future and it will save buying another PSU.

I've got to agree with dustyshiv, going for a cheap powersupply is just asking for trouble ,
ye sure i had a psu i thought was great, but kept getting blue screens of death ,
why? well it was unstable,(subtle hints should have been i couldn't boot up using two types of hard drives:shadedshu)
and until i took it to bits to clean it i had no clue it was on it's last legs
(mains caps where bubbling ,it's a wonder it didn't take out half if not all my pc)
i got my corsair hx650w because i sometimes have a lot of hard drives plugged in which will need a fair amount of juice
anyways cut a long story short my system now uses less electricity and makes a heck of a lot less noise
get a corsair

Infact the majority of pc users in the world, have cheap OEM psus.


Its just that we as enthusiasts have a tendacy to over clock the shit out of things, or fiddle about, normal pc users just leave the rig shut most of the time.


If your friend isn't an enthusiast a cheap psu will be fine, its why they come with waranties.

Oh in the UK if something is not " fit for purpose" I.E if your power supply blows your shit up, rather then powering it, your in your rights to get the company to pay for any repairs it may incur.

Its completely risk free as long as you know your legal rights guys and girls!

Ok, do you think I should stick with the corsair even though its 400w? At £37 its not much over budget. Would it power the system above with a bit of overclocking? I get free next day delivery on ocuk so thats a bonus.

I'm thinking the first psu on the list looks good for the money, however it doesn't come with a 6 pin connector which makes me think it isn't designed for gaming. I have adapters tho. After delivery it comes to £30 next day or £25 5 days super saver.

That Corsair can push out 520w total or something crazy actually.

Corsair like other good psy companies, under rate their psus .

So they have plenty of "wiggle room"

these cheaper ones tend to over rate the parts, see these 700 w psus that look the same as the 400 w psus?

( cheap ones) its because they ARE the same.

So don't buy a cheap "high power" psu, that's when you get melted blown up crap.

Is actually only a 400w psu or something stupid, they have a 800w version aswell.

The exhaust air because its so heavily loaded all the time is around 40c, which is insane.

Gets even hotter when you actually load your computer, and if you overclocked you'd have no stability at all.

Just be wary, read the stickers and as much information as possible.

Yeah, you still need to actually buy from a good OEM, in order to get a psu that won't explode in your face.

Ok i've found out this psu has 28a on the 12v rail so it should be fine to power a 4870 and maybe a bit of overclocking? Tagan are quite a good brand right?
