Are Kaby Lake CPUs bending like Sky Lake CPUs were?

Mine is right as rain.

Just watch what you are doing and you'll be fine.

But yes, the substrate is thinner than in past generations. Just like Skylake. It's really a non-issue though - If you're very careful (and you should be unless you have a tree that grows money).

Solaris isn't a hack n slash dude, I know he'll have no problems doing it if he does decide to.

I'm also going to do an experiment tomorrow with the sealant.. A friend got me a 3cc syringe from the lab and a blunt needle and all I need to do is fill the syringe with the permaseal gasket maker and have a nice perfect bead all around the lid minus the small vent gap..

Since I have no relid tool my water block will be the tool. I have 4 mounting posts on the board and the EK water block fits like a glove so no adjustments required.. My plan is to place the chip on the socket, glue the IHS and then lower it down on the PCB..

Before I delidded the CPU I used a fine point permanent marker and traced the outline around the lid for marking the exact position of the lid when it goes back on. Anyways the intel locking braket is removed just for now.. after I place the lid on, I just slide the EK block down and place the adjustment screws on and Cris cross tighten them down till tight and leave it till the glue cures.. After that I can pull the block off, fasten the retention lock back in place and lock it down with no movement at all.. Paste the top of the chip and install the block and done like dinner.. Well that's my plan and hope it works as I've carefully thought this out.

I'm still looking to buy an Intel chip. I was hoping for Ryzen but it looks as if that's a bad idea.

I'd take a Ryzen over the available Kaby Lake processors any day.

Thanks for sharing so why don't you tell us why?

Myself I wanted the 1800x and had the cash for it but fuck that and all the BS that came along with it.. At least Intel kaby has been proven and it's plug n play my friend, plug and play ;)

I guess no bending with my Skylake processor since it's working as expected and very low temps.
I have however left on some piece of plastic to place the CPU, as instructed by the manual.

What plastic, did it come with the board or with the CPU?

The black plastic thing that's supposed to be used to place the chip safely in the socket? Hmm interesting. I just looked in my manual and it shows leaving it installed just for installing and easy removal from the socket..

And @Tatty_One go for the 7700k.. I was in the same boat when ryzen came out and with all the problems that rizen from ryzen I choose the 7700k and haven't been happier.. She's a fast little chip ;)

I too am stuck between a 7700K and waiting another few weeks for a 1500X, thing is I only play one game, of course that may change over time, the rest of my usage is a bit of MS Office and browsing, to be honest I don't even need 8 threads as the game uses only 2 but for me Ryzen has changed the landscape a bit and for whatever reason I see less value in an i5 so by this weekend I need to decide if the 7700k is the easier option currently or whether the 1500X will require a little more effort and time...... seeing as I am lazy and old I have little of either :D

Because the "BS" is overblown. It has multi-threaded performance that no Kaby Lake can match, and its performance in games is more than enough(to the point it won't actually hold you back in games, your GPU should be doing that). But I don't think I'd go for the 1800X, the 1700 is the one I'd pick.

Dragging this thread sideways again (sorry) and thinking about my options mentioned above, if I got a 1700, knowing currently that they don't really overclock well, is there any merit in just getting a decent B350 board that would still give me some overclocking where I don't need all the "Bells & whistle's"? For my Meagre needs is a 1700 @ 3.9 - 4Ghz on a 350 gonna compete with a Kaby 7700k on a budget/mid ranged 270 at 4.6gig even....... appreciating that I use little in terms of multithreading. At the end of the day, in the UK a 1700 costs the same as a 7700K although cost is not the primary factor for me.

When you say you do little in terms of multithreading, what do you do then? Are you talking about just for gaming then? If you are only talking gaming, go with the Kaby Lake. If you think there is any chance that the multithreading is going to be useful in the future, then go with the 1700/350 combo. You should be able to get a 3.8-3.9GHz clock on the 1700, and that will do just fine for gaming, and absolutely destroy a 7700K in mulithreading. But, yes, nothing really beats an overclocked 7700K, or even a 7600k, in singlethreaded performance.

I do a lot of multitasking myself with lots of programs open at the same time. I have a dual-monitor setup too. Throw in a VM and I've got my system begging for mercy.

With that being said maybe going Ryzen for me is still a good idea what with the ability to run a lot of threads. I just hope that maybe in a year when Ryzen v2 is out I can do a simple drop in replacement.

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
No one as far as i know has posted here about this
mind you the www is a big place and i don't go everywhere
google shows very little
problems with "Skylake" bending were generaly user induced fitting to socket and massive heavy coolers incorrectly installed
Its still early... Also, it was the PCB being thinner and the pressure some heatsink had from clamping, not the weight, that would bend all corners of the PCB...

.. not sure what the rest of the thread is on about now at 25 posts.. lol!

I'd take a Ryzen over the available Kaby Lake processors any day.
Depends on my uses. If I could use more than 8 threads, sure.. why not it costs the same (for 1700)... otherwise, it costs more for.................... nothing if you don't use the cores. ;)

One game (2 threads), general browsing, some light office work and a bit of streaming. There is def a case for just getting a 7600K, I suppose my decision difficulties are pretty much because for the first time in a while there are genuine alternatives.

Just had two corners on i3-7100k pcb bent using INTELs own PIB cooler. One of the legs did not drop right into the mobo hole - I pressed alternate legs and the last one obviously failed to "click". When I looked, I found leg on the mobo instead of in the hole. Cooler tilted and paste untouched, so removed carefully only to find both corners of CPU PSB had been bent. On inspecting the Asus mobo, found bent pins, so >£200 damage.

I think we'll go back to AMD if these crappy Skylake and Kabylakes aren't thickened back up. We've built some nice Ryzens lately that are benchmarking EXTREMELY well and giving massive VFM against Intel CPU's.

No problems here installing my Skylake CPU with CM212 Evo.....

Lol, puts cooler on wrong, bends pcb, blames pcb and not incorrectly installed heatsink.

Brilliant!

So now Intel is selling us paper PCBs and toothpaste, and the internet knows best.

Its a strange world we live in :)

Oh come ON. We all make mistakes (perhaps excepting your good self of course Earthdog). Failing to spot 4th leg not in hole before clicking down should NOT bend a CPU. Especially as it was their stock cooler and not a monster of a third-party cooler.

We do make mistakes... all of us. Not sure what you point is there...

Uneven pressure can bend the thicker pcb cpus. The TYPE of heatsink doesnt matter as its the installing that borked the cpu... ;)

But yeah, PEBKAC here man. Sorry it happened.

You make a mistake, damage your CPU and then blame Intel. I've installed many cpus (including Skylake) and I have never damaged one. User error and it happens. Not Intel's fault.
