When you think about how computers got smaller and thus exponentially powerful, as of late 20th century. I think it makes sense to hypothesize those QM computers might actually very well integrate onto our lives at some point. Heck think about what you could do with those enormous processing powers at hand in the field of AI and simulation. Mining would be an underestimation of what it could be capable of.

Classical computers can be programed to do pretty much anything; quantum computers have very few known algorithms; i.e. are not generic computing machines.

I guess I have seen too many sci fi movies...

I am sure there will be many applications, the field has great potential, just maybe not all those being advertised.

Not everything. There are already "quantum-ready" crypto algorithms. Few in widespread use however.

No way; they have to get to grips with error correction first, and home use Quantum computers are about as likely as home based fusion reactors.

It's all about errors, reason the analogue classical computer was replaced by the digital.

Quantum has both aspects, and therein lies the issue.

Actually not I am a retired scientist and a Chinese firm has a Quantum computer based on a NMR instrument that is available for purchase (50K).

When was the last time you took the time to seriously follow various new developments related to quantum computing? Of course, errors, or rather "noise" in this case, are part of the operation of any complex system. New methods have been introduced, both to reduce noise and perhaps to put it to good use.

I've been following this field closely and it's a far cry from the promises made by people 20 years ago or even five years ago. Noise is still a problem and the actual number of qubits is less than the advertised number of qubits due to the need for error correction.

There is certainly a lot of interest and investment in quantum computing, both from governments and private companies. It's possible that we could see more widespread use of quantum computers in the coming years as the technology continues to improve.

Some things are not possible, regardless of improvement; this is the reason there are almost no analogue computers around these days.

Then again, I'd be delighted to be shown wrong.

The "killer app" for quantum computers hasn't been found.

What yall need to realize is that "quantum computers" isn't innately better than regular computers. Its just different. Things that are extremely hard to figure out on a regular computer (in particular: quantum physics emulators), are extremely easy to accomplish on quantum computers.

Its just extremely... circular... right now. The only people who seem interested in the new-stuff quantum computers can do are quantum physicists. Sure, there's Shor's algorithm for breaking RSA that cryptographers are worried about, but there's not too many other "killer apps" figured out on a quantum computer yet.

Quantum computers can provably solve new problems that regular computers can't do. Now we just need to find... a useful quantum-problem that people want to solve. Or alternatively, the quantum physicists can keep playing around with the technology themselves and just incrementally improve it, maybe it will be figured out when we get more qbits??
