Hey guys, I just got my ASUS STRIX RX 480 to replace my G1 Gaming RX 480. But I'm still having heat problems with my temps going to 89C while playing Overwatch. Is that even okay? My case is a little small since it's still coming from an old prebuilt computer. I'm uping the fan speeds as I type in MSI Afterburner to see if I can stop this problem.

Optimally you would want it lower, sure. But it can run that hot and not suffer any damage.
Okay fair enough, should I get a case fan to get air to flow better?

might want to check the temp of the air in side the case to see if you are lacking proper ventilation of hot air out.

Even if you can leave side panel off to see what temps you get might give you an idea as well.

Inside of a cooler that vents inside could get a blower style that vents the heat out though those tend to be less effective in cooling the gpu overall but getting that heat out could help.

Your Max temp under heavy load should be 80C, and occasionally I will hit that mark but only briefly until the stock fan curve ramps up to bring it down.
If you have a 80mm fan port at the underside of your case, I would mount a fan there as it would blow cool air up into your GFX cooler. Just make sure you have enough space underneath the floor of your case.
I actually made a tray to raise the corners an additional inch off the floor, but I believe you can purchase taller rubber feet to add more height.
I don't think I have a place to mount on the bottom of the case since I'm still using a prebuilt computer's case. I have three possible places to put fans with 1 being on the side of the case, 1 behind the case, and another in front (but that one doesn't have an opening to take in air).

You can also make your own custom fan curve profile. But the 480 card does run a little hot normally.

Well, going off what I said, I would put the front (regardless if there is no space for air... if there is a place to mount a fan its meant to be there for some reason.. ;)) and side as intake and the rear as exhaust.

Occasionally, I get to 80C which according to my software is the Maximum Temp for the RX 480. However, this only happens under heavy loads and just until the stock fan curve ramps up the speed to cool it back down into the mid 70's.
If you have a 80mm fan port at the bottom of your case, I would mount one there as it will blow straight up into your GFX Cooler.
Just make sure you have good clearance underneath the case. I actually made a ghetto mod tray to raise mine off the floor an additional inch, but you can buy tall rubber feet that look very nice:

Maybe it'll only be two since I don't know if I can mount of this side panel

I just removed the side panel and the temps dropped significantly, so I may need a new case and/or case fans.

Mine never goes over 72C I have the sapphire nitro+ I have done a couple builds with the strix card however and found the default fan curve left a bit to be desired. They run hot to save fan noise. You can use amd overdrive to set the max temp and fan speed and it'll drop the temps alot.

Your whole system is most likely running hot with no case fans.

*Ah, I see you removed the side panel and the temps dropped. Get some fans!! :D

Will do since the STRIX has 2 fan connectors and I have another on my Mobo I think. Also got a new power supply so I'm good there. I can mount a side fan on the panel I currently have right?

Just a question; do you have your PSU mounted so that the fan is inside the case?

Yep, why do you ask?

Because the fan should be directing the hot air from the PSU outside and not inside the case which causes additional heat. You should flip the PSU the other way so the fan exhausts the air out of the vent.

The PSU fan always exhausts air out of the back... the difference is if the fan takes fresh air and exhausts out the back (facing down), or case air out the back (facing up)...

The cx430m's fan is thermally controlled but it's always on. the only time it (any psu) would let heat in the case from psu is if the fan is off and the heat rises. Otherwise, any properly built psu I takes where the fan is, and exhausts out the back where the power plug and switch are.

Actually, after thinking about it in his situation with zero case fans, the PSU is the only exhaust fan he has!

I have the Antec HGC 520w modular as of right now. So should I flip it so that it's not facing my computer parts or keep it the way it is?

Ha, yeah, he may want to do that (mount it with the fan up/inside the case) to add to his one exhaust fan and airFLOW at least.

My PSU is mounted up with the fan facing down toward the rest of my parts, should I flip it?

If I was you, I would mount it with the fan facing the inside of your case/parts, also add an exhaust (rear) intake (bottom/front).

Really... if you have a custom board in there or one that is at least ATX format, I would just get another case and do it right. :)

Yeah I already have it like that. I'm going to upgrade fully soon on black friday so I can grab a new case too. Any recommendations?

Stop using afterburner. The driver can do everything and more. These are my settings for 1400ish and this keeps it reasonable quiet and cool in games. I do apologize I mistyped 72C meant 82C lol.
