I want a single GPU card not a horde of cards that suck tons of power, require a specific board to CF and scale <<100%. IMO, multi-GPU solutions are for benching addicts rather than for any realworld use.

it trades blows with the X2 which so happens to be cheaper, and as stated in another thread, for the price of a GX2 you could get 3x 3870's and a mobo to use em on

I was going to say that you were exaggerating about getting 3 x 3870 and a mobo for $650, but i think it might be possible

Actually, the 3870x2 doesn't touch it in higher resolutions, the only time the 3870x2 "trades blows" is when the both of them are CPU limitted. And I guess I talk a common ATi argument on this one, wait until there are a few driver releases and then compare the two. The 9800GX2 is already showing what a power house it is, the drivers just need to be there to complete the picture, and they are already pretty damn good. If you look at W1z's review of the 9800GX2, the 9800GX2 significantly beats the 3870x2 in most of the tests in resolutions 1600x1200 and 2048x1536. There are a few that are the exception, but the fact that we are still on the first set of drivers explains that. However, saying the 3870x2 is even close to the performance level of the 9800GX2 is laughable. Some of the tests show the 9800GX2 nearly doubling the framerates of the 3870x2 at the 2048x1536 resolution, that is impressive.

I'm glad, though, that ATI is keeping to their promise of not selling anything over the $499 mark. I thought that was just wishful thinking when they said that, but they seem to be keeping their word.

so actually i think the X2 is maybe the better buy if your going for either. I dont think it matters if on a couple of games your even as much as 20fps out when your still gaming at over 90fps

I don't care about silly one-way gaming benckmark, 3dmark, relative performance, or other garbage. Its true that most ppl don't have the time to mess around with fully testing the cards in recent games but I do & it becomes very boring

I also usually don't have access to equipment until it hit the shelves but thats a mute point too. These cards are so similar in game performance its a shame. The GX2 get higher fps than the X2 but get ridiculous frame drops @ high res when compared to the X2.

An example in (1920x1200) Crysis's Reckoning level when the giant alien warship came out was that the GX2 lowest fps was a gd 0.8 while the X2 was 7.8. Both are still unplayable but the GX2 was a slide show

We all know that Crysis's Reckoning level hate SLI & CF so these two cards will perform like a 8800gt & a 3870. If you look at a game like UT3 which loves SLI & CF, both cards eat that game alive & the GX2 got higher overall fps then the X2 but I didn't care one bit because even at 1920x1200 both cards played the game so beautifully, start to finish, with no hardcore frame drops that it brought a tear to my eye

I just wish the idiot game companies be considerate for us & stop doing crap like Crysis which can kill a supercomputer. IMO UT3 looked even better than Crysis & yet both cards played UT3 like they were laughing at non-demanding it was.

And again, like I said, I'm going to take the standard ATi responce to seemingly underexpected performance. Give it a few driver releases and the few games the 9800GX2 is behind on will catch up. The card is plenty powerful, the drivers just have issues.

Bottom line is the 3870X2 is doing very well compared to the GX2, they are no where near each other when it comes to the price bracket, so the X2 being close still makes it very impressive. The GX2 is fast, yeah, but it's overpriced for what you get, and it's already causing some heat related problems. (bit-tech review). After looking over W1z's review, it makes it even more obvious that it's way over priced, in two games it's what i'd call a good deal faster than an X2, but then the frame rates are so high it doesn't even matter. For that extra £150-200 for on average 15-20% or so is ridiculous.

That could be the case, fact is though is that people say it for ATi because they are generally really good with squeezing performance out of their cards with each driver update. Nvidia doesn't seem to be having much luck with the same thing, either way, this is about 3850/70 price drops which is good for everybody.

I knew this was coming when I saw a 3850 on newegg that went down to $140 after a rebate. I hope $159 is the true base price for the 3870. The updated Diamond versions come with an incredible heatsink similar to the Ice turbo that covers everything except for the first ram chip on the top of the card. It OC's to 900/2800 on the stock heatsink!!! Get that for $159 & I swear you'll be in love

I had a Visiontek with that same heatsink. I got rid of it. Thing didn't OC worth what I just left in the toilet.

It seems that the bios is completely unlocked, thats what Diamond is good for. I can't mess around with any other vender.
