B550 Sorta....

Does it really matter what I think personally it would just be an opinion and as they say just like assholes everyone has one.
I think it matters, because it wasn't an intentional dick move.
Makers thought they could use a feature to differentiate themselves, AMD didn't go for the fragmentation that would have created and that was it.
The outcome was iffy, but a big part of that is press created.

At best it was poor communication between board partners and AMD at worst it was AMD being incompetent with its initial agesia update that supported Ryzen 3000 either way it should have been easily avoided for a company the size of AMD prior to it ever being in the press.

Whether it was the mobo manufacturers or AMD it still a dick move.

I believe Asus validated multiple boards that supported it and it was even tested as working properly on their B450 Tuf before AMD was like cool story bro.

Not all boards can handle it.

I think it was something AMD didn't foresee. Either they thought it wasn't doable or they thought makers wouldn't want to cannibalize on their X570 lineup by enabling the feature on X470 boards. But then makers probably thought "hey, we've already overengineered these boards, why not score some extra points by giving users something extra?". And then AMD decided to step in.
But I'm with you, at some point the communication definitely broke down somewhere.

Yes but oxrufiioxo is right, they tested PCI Gen 4 on several B450 boards and it worked. According to tests a SSD was as fast on B450 as on X570, so AMD could have let it at the Mainboard makers choice if they support it or not. To say generally it‘s only allowed for X570 isn‘t the right way in my opinion. Everyone complains about Intel and their decision to always invent new chipsets. Z270 to Z370 for example, Intel says that it‘s necessary to provide enough power but tests showed, that a coffee lake could run on a Z270 without problems. So where is the difference here between AMD and Intel? Tests say that it works but no, AMD/Intel say it‘s not allowed...

So all the arguments that it won‘t work because of signal quality and so on would have been right if there were no tests before. But they tested it and it worked, no signal problems and so on, all good.

It's a liability and AMD would utimately get the blame if it is unstable or just doesnt work at all and yet was advertised as working...

Why should one blame AMD, they could blame the mainboard maker if it wouldn‘t work. Or other said they could offer it for B450 and state that it‘s not guaranteed that it works, so people could decide wether to go with B450 and have luck if PCIe Gen 4 works, or decide to go with X570 and definitely have PCIe Gen 4 working.

Because it's the Chipset AMD drew up the design for. I mean AMD is taking some heat over the 5600XT bios upgrade unfortunately.

Look if you want a feature write a bios for it.

Because people really like to inform themselves on a subject before placing the blame where you come from, right? ;)
