Hey guy's, I am looking to buy a new cpu heatsink for an upcoming build and I wanted some recommendations.

I want to spend between 20 and 40$ on it. I am currently using a cooler master hyper t4.

I want a heatsink that will allow me to do some moderate overclocking. The cpu will most likely be a 3rd or 4th gen i7.

Thanks.

At that price point.. it'd be hard to get much better than the 212.
But this thing is on sale and its decent...

212 imo. pretty sure CM shot themselves in the foot with that design. Anytime I need cheap air cooling its my goto.

212 is old and has been eclipsed by other coolers that said its still a solid option.

If your using standard height memory you can grab a Scythe Fuma and get top tier air cooling performance for dirt cheap. Other options similar to the 212 in terms of performance would be the CRYORIG H7.

That said pretty much any modern single tower 120 mm cooler will perform the same as the Hyper. Even smaller coolers like the CRYORIG M9 and Scythe Katana 4 have proven to be able alternatives while being smaller.

Nothing comes close to the Scythe Fuma Rev B (69C) at $45 ... with TIM < $50 w/o shipping ... Amazon has free shipping if you have prime for $45.99

11C better than the Hyper 212 (80C)
12C better than the Cryorig C7 (81C).

The Fuma matches or exceeds the $90 flagship air coolers from Noctua and Cryorig

Scythe Fuma ($44.99 ... shipping $4.99) ... If ya want a somewaht better TIM see below
https://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=FAN-FM1100&c=CJ&cjevent=98848283257d11e9817b00d10a24060e

There's no better buy for TIM than Shin Etsu G751 ($3.99 ... shipping free))
https://www.directron.com/g751.html

To my thinking, a 10-11C improvement in CPU temps for that small increase in cost is a no brainer .,,, likely pick up another 1.0 - 1.5c with the Shin Etsu.

I agree with crazyeyes, my cryorig H7 outperformed my 212 evo on intel quads. Intel six core processors are a different story.

Scythe Fuma or Macho Rev B are pretty great
My Rev B keeps my 8700K at a max of around 60-70C during CPU stressing games

Interesting cooler. Might have to check that out next time I'm in the need. Though by that point something better might come along
I like that it includes 2 fans, so it might have a slight price premium on the $30 bracket, I usually end up adding a second fan to the 212 types anyway so they aren't really $30 either.

That said how does it do with an optional 3rd fan?

I think the bar chart says it all ... it's kicking 2 x 120mm CLCs to the side of the road w/o any effort that are 2-3 times the cost and twice as loud. It's also short and fits almost any ATC / mATX case.

Of course if you are not overclocking, then can just spend the minimum , but of OCing or running hotter CPUs, how do you ignore 10+C ? A Cryorig H7 with an extra Fan is $45 / The Hyper 212 Evo with extra fan is $46, And the extra fan shouldn't get you more than 1C or so (see here ,,, https://www.vortez.net/index.php?ct=articles&action=file&id=10754) that's 9 - 10C difference for essentially the same price.

At Price / performance ratio ... to my eyes, nothing comes close. Personally I consider myself best served by being a "hardware whore" .... I tend to go with whomever has the best numbers.... well most of the time.

a) Brand Loyalty (if you have that Door Hanger thingie on bedroom door and logo posters o the wall, gotta stick with the theme (Not my thing, but I can't argue against it).
b) You want flashy lightie bling bling stuff (Not me, ... I just don't see the appeal and find it distracting to the level of annoyance ... if that's ya thang tho, by all means.)
c) You don't want 2 pound weight hanging off ya MoBo (legitimate if you ship / move ya PC often, but compared to the 60 - 70 pounds of clamping force applied by the CPU mount, kinda irrelevant otherwise)
d) You just don't want to look at a big shiny thing (valid enough)
e) Strict $30 budget (Hey, don't want anyone not feeding the cat ... or the kids .. or raising the ire of "she who must be obeyed")
f) You insist on dead silence and custom loop is all that will make ya happy.
g) You have a theme color and you will spend $15 more for a Phanteks Heat Sink as it was color matched to your RAM and MoBo highlights ... my son spent $80 to get an orange one (Build was white with orange highlights ... white and black were $55 then ... red and blue $65). He was gonna switch to the white one but decided on a Swiftech AIO and swaaped out original coolant for orange dy
ed coolant.
h) You want ... well cause ya want what ya want. My wife uses that reasoning all the time .. I have asked her to explain but no luck as yet. :)

When doing a build, I just give the user a copy of the chart above (as well as few others) and have them tell me what they want. Tend to do the same (TPU charts / links) with many components. Good thginbg Wiz doesn't charge copyright fees :)

Because they work, better than oem solutions.

Explain why they are bad?

I tried it on an x5690, 3770k, and x3360 and I found it struggled with all of them. Also the gaps are quite wide, so fit and finish would be a tad poor in my opinion. But that is my only experience with a lower end type cooler, I don't know if its unique or if they are all like that. At stock clocks or close to its fine.. So I guess it isn't complete shite. Pardon the profanity in my earlier post, I see there is no filter here.

It's the best $25 cooler (on sale) . That's why everyone uses it. Its appears you are the only one that does not like it

The hardware is a little tricky but it just works and fits any case. I've pushed many a CPU to the limit on this thing.

I can see where on an EE Intel CPU it would struggle but I would hope you would spend more for that

I still have one cooling an 8350 with an oc which puts more heat out than any of those chips. Has an El cheapo second fan on it though.

Your FX 8350 starts out at 125w, x5690 starts out at 130w.. Ok so maybe I was a bit hard on it, its ok for what it is, but its not the top of the chain for sure, even for the price. It is nice and small though.

Edit:

And the hardware is not tricky to use. I like how I can slide out the tray on my stacker 830 and not have a heatsink in the way. Pretty sure its good for about 150w.

Read what I wrote again. I don't care what stock tdp was. Chip runs around 5ghz under turbo which puts tdp over 250w.

I don't see where you said you were running 5ghz? That's great its working well for you, I have one and it must be a dud.. so I cant say I'm a real fan. To each his own right? Didn't mean to stir the pot and play with emotions here, I was just offering my opinion, which I did change slightly because it isn't the worst and its size is helpful. But the cooler didn't work well for me, which is fine too, because I didn't pay for it. For the record, I don't use any of the green stuff on my x58. No c1e, no turbo, just raw voltage, max LLC. Let the current flow. Chip is good to 4.8 at about 1.55v.

The Hyper 212 Evo looks attractive for budget builds ($29,99) on newegg at this time. And when we had to spend $90 for a Cryorig R1 to pick up 8C and get down to 72C, I could understand not wanting to spend 3 times as much. But when ya can pick up an extra 11C for just $17 more grabbing a Scythe Fuma, I call that the proverbial "no brainer".
