hi guys, need a virus scan, i want a very low resources virus scan and protection. NO anoying pop ups or having a mind of its own. i would love to hear your views.

Thanks Reefer. :pimp:

I am using Kasperspy. I'm not sure if I like it. Although there are no popups, the full scanning mode hogs all of the computers resources. It gets to the point where windows take really really long to load, and clicking on the stop icon doesn't shut the scan down :(

Microsoft Security Essential; clean, fast, low resource, fairly decent detection rate, popup only when detecting virus, well integrated with windows and best of all, FREE.

I'm on AVG Free. It's alright. Doing a full scan atm, CPU usage is 15-40% (with peaks on 70%) on both cores, memory usage is 80MB and rising.

kaspersky is one of the best out there, doesnt hog resources or slow down your computer if you have 8 gigs and a quad core. lol

oh i also use, malwarebytles and lavasoft ad aware, too catch anything kaspersky might miss, but kaspersky doesnt miss shit, thats why you have to pay for it

Trend Micro never pops up on me during games or anything annoying like that. It's pretty good, wasn't free though.

I still like Avast Home after all these years. I did try AntiVir Free and it wasn't bad but the popup in the middle of the screen everytime it updated became pretty annoying.

I use kaspersky 2010 build 9.0.0.706 beta earlier versions of 2010 was really really buggy. but theyve slowly gotten better & it dont hog as much resources as their crappy failware KIS2009

I 2nd that, i find Avast good, even tho i don't use it on my PC i put it on all my other PC's that i work or build. But i find it to use a bit of resources. Out of all the ones i have tested NOD32 was far the best, you would never know it was even running. Only problem is its not free.

kaspersky here as well.

there is a tickbox which stops it being a resource poophead

tick "scan only new and changed files" and it saves a lot of time on your next scan :)

I personally have used Avast for years and Like it .. Seems to do a very good job NS any scans I,ve ever done online have never shown anything thats been missed . I,ve put it probably on dozens of computers and tell people if you don't like it and feel you have to pay I would recomend Nod32 and have had only 1 person ever buy it and they liked it. I don't bother paying for alot of programs cause theirs very good free ones available most times..

One thing though anti virus is not the only answer you need a good antispyware program also. They work hand in hand to keep your computer nice and cootie free.;)

just to point this out (as i always do): kaspersky can be had for as little as $10 USD for a year (or $20USD for 3 years) on ebay - thats antivirus, mild antispyware (admittedly, its weak on this), firewall, adblocker, worm defense, and parental controls (useless to most of us) all in one.

I use Avast! Home on all of my computers, and it's great, blocks all suspicious programs, scans files that you downloaded when you open them, low CPU/memory usage, and free.

Eset NOD32 + MalwareBytes Anti-Malware

I like Nod 32 it's very low on resources and seems to scan and do it's job very good, it's just 1 process plus the gui which doesn't use very much ram at all.

Ive used:

Nod32 = its pretty good but their complete security package sucks a little. I dont know if its changed since i last used it.

Trend Micro PcCillin = used their security pro package too, they are good but not GREAT, they let too much crap through so I dumped them.

Norton: Internet Security package - I heard their 2009 package was the the best. better detection rate then Kaspersky which is really hard to beat. not tried 2009, last time i ever used Norton was their Internet security 2005 package. back in the days when Norton use to hog a ton of resources...
I never went back to them because 3 months into my years subscription my legit key was blacklisted for some stupid reason. I emailed them proof of purchase but they still refused to reactivate my product, so that was all 3 keys (1 used by me & 3 spare) gone in a blink of an eye. what makes it worse is their support number diverts you to a fucking call center in India - Ive nothing against India, the race or the people living there. while i sympathise that the unemployment ratio is through the roof there, getting them to work in helpdesk/support center on the fricking phones kills customer satisfaction quicker then Tom Jones walking into a crowded mall & dropping his pants.

Im not buying Norton again if i can help it.

McCafee - dont waste your time. honestly i dont know why this company still exists let alone working in pc security.

Panda - I tested their internet security package when they were new on the scene - pretty good but they are a lesser known company so therefore get less sales because the market is dominated by Norton & Kaspersky.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Still using Nod 32 V3 for now.

Just my 2 pennies. Avira and superanti-spyware or malwarebytes.
Or, Zonealarm- has gaming mode.

Avast home here too!

They were not very good when they were new IMO. My school had it and it stopped ... nothing I think. It is ALOT better now though.

well I dunno what your school was doing, but it was fine for me - most reviews also said it was sorta on par (or close) to Nortons I.S packages. who knows anyway :P I still got the CD lying around somewhere.
