No it's not my pc but that of a friend :)

- Upon powering up the pc, I hear the windows startup sound but the monitor remains on standby.
- Monitor and cable work fine when attached to another pc.
- Monitor displays properly when cable is attached to onboard graphics.

Am I safe in concluding that the dedicated GPU is dead?
Thanks.

Does the fans on the graphics card spin up?

Can you see the graphics card in the device manager when running on Integrated graphics?

Is the power connector inserted correctly? (if it has one)

try it in another pc.

Unplug the pc from the mains, take the Cmos battery out for a minute or two and see if it works. Some boards I have worked with in the past have been known not to switch to dedicated GPU for random reasons still I completely reset the bios

Card or Motherboard Slot not working ????
Can card be tested in another slot ? or as @CAPSLOCKSTUCK Said another PC
Slot can be tested with alternative Known Working Card

try it in another pc.

I would be surprised if a Senior Moderator wouldn't know that if a GPU it's not working in a PC it should be tested on another one.

How is your friends PSU? I had a similar issue with my old 280X a couple of years back, turned out one of the 12v rails had gone on my PSU and the GPU was just not getting the juice. The 75W from the slot would be enough to get the fans spinning but may not be enough to give the actual GPU a heartbeat (unless it's a very low powered one of course).

Well that's not very helpful, what do apples have to do with oranges? Jeepers.

C'mon, to try a GPU on a second PC that is a basic rule.

okay okay stop being such a professor...:p:lovetpu: but I doubt that skill is needed for being a moderator.

I know software Techs who are not very savvy with hardware and visa versa.
Sorry for the derail :ohwell:

Of course I know that. It's only that if people here say that it's highly likely the GPU is dead I don't want to risk (bother?) testing it in the only working pc I have in the house which also has a couple of problems of its own. It'd be like flogging a dead horse. If a RAM stick gives me memtest errors on one pc I wouldn't keep on testing it on other pc's and I thought perhaps this case might be similar.

The owner of the pc with the suspected dead card is quite an unreliable person computer-wise (the type who turns off firewall and removes antivirus to be able to download illegal stuff). The pc is full of viruses and bitcoin miners. I barely want it in the same room as my own pc

Btw, being a senior mod doesn't make me an expert in all fields of I.T. either ;)

between what you stated in the OP, and the questions asked and answered so far, I think it is highly likely to be a dead GPU, I'd guess around a 95% probability at this point. If it is possible, test it in another PC to make sure.

Card probably mined itself to death

For some reason this description alone made me think of 'get to the Choppa' by austrian death machine.

Nobody likes a smart ass.

Anyway yeah i have face a same issue and i was sad to inform the owner that the gpu was in a better place.

Lol just a quick update. Malwarebytes didn't want to install on this pc, but I managed to install Malwarebytes Anti rootkit. First scan it only found 6 malware (but a couple were in the ATI drivers!).
I managed to get rid of the bicoin miners, they were in a fake svchost.exe using 95% of CPU.

Oh... and GPU is working now.

Now doing a second scan - Found 2576 malware so far .

I really should have remembered that this friend of mine never learns and no matter what I tell him he'll always infect his pc really badly, so it's imperative to check viruses before blaming any hardware.

I still haven't managed to turn windows firewall on.

Every 2 or 3 months he gives me his pc for repair, which I do for free since I'm a friend and don't actually work as a tech, and I waste a day or 2 either reinstalling everything or cleaning up viruses.
But I guess this is the last time I'm gonna do it for free... :wtf:

Glad to hear that its working but you should school your friend how to safely use the internet :D

EDIT: Was there a AV even installed

This ^ :lovetpu:

In that case I would strongly consider reinstalling windows....

Dam it i was just about to edit my post to add that same line.

If for some reason you cant do a clean install i would recommend running kaspersky rescue disk.
