I've just moved into my first house and I've noticed some people of 'questionable' moral standards live nearby. I have thousands of dollars worth of PC components and other stuff in my house and while I am insured for any stolen items I would like to know if there's any computer location software that logs things like IP, location etc on boot, so if some thief dumb enough steals my PC and boots it connected to the internet, I get instant location and IP details uploaded to somewhere.

Google has yielded only paid ones.

ESET has an "Anti-theft" feature in their Smart Security products:

ESET HELPS TRACK AND LOCATE YOUR MISSING LAPTOP

If you lose your device, don't lose your head. There is hope. Through our Anti-Theft online interface, you can start searching for your device immediately.

Track its location, view webcam snapshots and send a message to the screen. All these options help you reunite with your device.

But if they steal it and sell it to someone else, and that person is savvy enough- what's to stop them from taking the hard drive out or simply not connecting to the web?

Sounds like you need some home security if anything.

+1 on that! I would contact one of the home security companies and have them install a security system. Hell, I think ADT does it for $99. Plus it will lower the home insurance rates as well.

they wont help if the missing PC doesnt have a GPS and webcam installed. you cant track a physical location via IP address.

you can set up (paid, possibly free as well) webcam systems to email off snapshots if movement is detected, but you'd need to make sure the camera catches their faces.

You can track your laptop and pc location with out any software you can find your laptop and pc location by device IP address.

... no you cant.

Meraki Systems Manager can sorta track location by IP but it's not all that great sometimes. Depends on the ISP

This is my mom's laptop...He he

But it's more worth it for the other stuff it can do like shutdown, kill processes, RDP, screenshot, etc.

This works regardless of the network it's connected to. It even works over restricted networks like hotels, cafes, etc.

if you ran that on me, you'd get the wrong city. all the tracking stuff depends on your ISP, and they dont easily give that kind of thing away.

in my case, my ISP is located far away from me - so tracing via IP is wildly inaccurate.
