Cuda faster with 9800gx2 or GTX280?

Just curious here if anyone knows?
Been looking for a test and can't find one, maybe too early yet.

Just had to change out a 9800gx2 for a GTX280 in a customers machine, kinda hope the gtx280 is faster.

i mite be wrong but i think the gx2 is faster at cuda , but they are pretty much on par wit each other, i think

I think it really depends on the application being used.

In terms of F@H, the 9800GX2 puts out a higher PPD when you set it up to use both cores with two seperate clients. Some CUDA apps that seperate the load between the two cores on the 9800GX2 would be slightly faster, however I don't think there are many apps like this currently. Most apps would only use a single core on the 9800GX2, so in that case the GTX280 would be faster.

isnt it the shaders that cuda uses ,so instead it would use 128 cores x2 for the gx2

Yes, CUDA apps use the shaders. However, like I said, with the 9800GX2 most would only use one of the two cores, so only 128 shaders.

No each GPU has its own dedicated shaders and the gpu tech cannot allow each gpu to access more than its programmed shaders.

Yep, I'm sure. That is why you have to jump through hoops to get F@H to use more than one video card. To the computer, the 9800GX2 is two video cards.

sry i thought the gpus worked as one and yes i no they have there own ram and shaders but i didnt think cuda would have to support multitreading if they was on the same card

i didnt even think F@H could use more than one GPU, even with jumping thru hoops, is this no longer the case?

i have a system that could fold with 224 sp's - a 128 card, a 64 and a 32 - 8800GTX, 9600GT, 8600GT

i thought the GTX280 was there is a seperate part of the core to run CUDA isn't there?
