Damaged Haswell Box. Should I return it?

Hi everyone.

If possible, I would like to have your opinion on it.

I recieved two 4670k from AMAZON today and one of them has a damaged box while the other is 100% clean.

I'm quite paranoïd about getting DOA product so I usually ask for an exchange when an item box is damaged. Among the two processors i got, one has like a cut from a cutter on the box, and said box also has a damaged corner as if somebody made it fall on the ground. If that happened, could it have damaged the processor in it???

Here's two pictures:

What do you think about it? Should i ask for a new one ? It doesn't cost me anything where i live because Amazon just swaps items without question when a customer is not happy with it.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Looks rather mild, damage wise. I am pretty sure Amazon will replace it if it is damaged, even if it is removed from the box. Just keep your paperwork, in case.

Packaging is generally made to absorb the impact forces. I seriously doubt the chip was even close to being damaged. Just my two cents, good luck!

The plastic clamshell that holds the CPU is pretty sturdy so I'd say don't worry about it. Especially considering that the CPU is pinless.

Did you check to see if the chip is doa? or just the box? Not trying to be snide, but if you want a pristine box for display purposes - then exchange it.

My LG led hdtv box arrived ten times worse with no ill to this day.

The cpu is packaged very well, and is pretty sturdy on it's own. In fact, cpu's are the one component I don't worry about in shipping! I think it will be fine. Best advice is insert it in socket and see if it works.

For that little of damage...I'd say no. If you have any issues with your documented pictures you may contact the distributor or Intel directly and see if they want you to verify the chip and cooler inside operate as designed or they may request a return shipment to claim against the handlers of that item.

Those are pretty minor damage spots...I don't see that causing any issues nor Intel wanting to do anything about it...but it might be worth documenting at least just in case something awry really pops up from it in the one in a million or more chance.

:toast:

i bet the cpu will be fine, that's suck a small natch, and like Major_A says the little plastic container holds the cpu pretty well, if you are paranoid about DOA products why not cpu up cpus locally?

I think the cpu will be oki, even if "Totoro" jumps on it

I've bought used CPUs that have come in a bubble mailer (my current 3770K was one of those). All had worked fine. I wouldn't worry about such a tiny crush on the outside box.

If anything, the only stuff that could have broken is a fan blade or something and that's a BIG if since the HSF comes in their own box as well.

I wouldn't have Even posted the Thread NEVERMIND returning it. It's fine, unless it was soaked in water as well. It doesn't look like a "drop force" damage either. It looks like "crush force" damage. From two packages being forced together. And the CPU is suspended Fairly well in there too.

I'd check the heatsink/fan for broken frames. The CPU is all solid state so they hardly get damaged but you can check for dents and chipped wafer. To me the cut looked like from opening the case for stocking and the crushed corner probably because it fell from the shelf or slipped out of a person's hand when picked up.

Llke the others have said, the damage is slight and the CPU inside will be just fine, so don't worry about that.

Back in 2007 I bought a heavy 2900 Pro graphics card delivered to me in a box that looked like it had been used as a football all around the warehouse :shadedshu: and the internal packaging was all busted allowing the card to knock around inside all loose, yet it worked perfectly. Still, spending so much money and getting a b-grade item that might have hidden damage really pissed me off so I got them to replace it.

Personally I hate damaged boxes and will get them replaced if the damage is anything but very minor. If I had your box, I'd replace it, mainly due to the knife cut.

Finally, it's worth getting it replaced if you want to give something as a present, as something like this looks rather cheapskate even though it wasn't your fault.

They ship items in boxes to protect the item inside. Looks like it did its job. :)

Amazon would likely replace it if it was purchased from them but if I were you, I'd take pictures (which you already did) and try it. If the product doesn't work, notify them that the box was damaged before opening and when you did open it, the product was defective. Amazon will replace it and open a claim with the courier.

The knife cut probably comes from the guy that opened the pallet. Pretty common occurrence and nothing to worry about.

Hell, I tore the lid off my 3570k and it's still fine! Other people are using hammers...

That's just superficial (like everyone else said).

Considering people are de-lidding using hammers with vices you should be solid.

not, it look just fall from table or like that
i guess the processor and the hsf is fine but better test it

completely trashed.

Hit that with a hammer and send it back..

No seriously that's basically pristine compared to alot of post shipping boxes.
