Dark Mode - Feedback please

Change is hard. I like the banner idea and I think once people get used to it existing the button location won't be an issue.

But light mode uses bold, non-bold, too?
It is harder to see in Dark mode for some reason:

Just for comparison. I'm not sure if it's just the blue on black that makes the bold harder to notice, but it's definitely a little harder to see. Maybe we'll get used to it, but maybe some tinkering could help.

@W1zzard
You say that, but my thumb muscle memory for the “What’s new” button on mobile is completely messed up now. I have to aim slightly to the left now. So it does work well, but at what cost? What cost, I ask you!?

any suggestions?

@W1zzard
Honestly, unless Xenforo has a Customizable UI feature where one can choose which buttons he sees in the header, this isn’t worth fixing. I was mostly joking, my slight inconvenience doesn’t outweigh the benefit of most users being able to switch between modes on the fly with an easy to reach button.

I could put it to the left of the user avatar icon, but it seems convention nowadays to have the dark/light toggle all the way to the right -> people will not find it and keep making threads "where is teh button?"

@W1zzard
It is, yeah, and having it to the left of the icon would be aesthetically unpleasant I would think, since it would break up the button layout. The current position is honestly pretty spot on and anyone who like me finds themselves hitting Search by mistake will just adjust and it will fell fine after a time.

Are we going to be able to change the blue lettering to white for dark mode by any chance?

Not sure if someone pointed it out already, but the cog on the top bar is kinda confusing, and somewhat of a waste.
Confusing in that there is already a preferences page that has a lot of... preferences... that one can change. The cog menu exposes only one.
A waste because, except for those doing testing, people don't frequently switching between the two. I think the toggle at the bottom of the page is a better position, plus the one in the preferences page.

A significant number of people disagrees with you and asked for an option at the top, even though I agree with you

It appears in my browser as a light-dark icon, not as a cog. The light-dark icon is pretty straightforward and makes more sense than a cog which implies general settings (i.e., more than one feature).

Anyhow the dark mode is a welcome addition.

I've been using Firefox on iPhone/iPad for several years now to read this site (and many others) because Firefox on iOS/iPadOS has a native dark mode, very important when surfing at night (in a dark room). I'll probably continue to use Firefox on iOS/iPadOS because a lot of other sites I visit still haven't implemented dark mode.

With display panels getting larger and brighter, dark mode reduces eye strain during night viewing. And my eyes aren't getting any younger either... Good to have a choice here like many other sites have already provided.

Am I the only one who actually prefers the default theme and finds it easier on the eyes?
You're probably not. I prefer light themes on small screens and dark on big ones.
Having light of a thousand suns right in your face in a moderately lit room (like launching genshin impact) on a 50" screen is far from a pleasant experience.

I vote we do away with democracy in this one. >_>

After a little bit of squinting and more than a few seconds questioning whether my brain is completely fried from spending too much hours behind screens, turns out it's supposed to be a symbol of the Sun. not a cog...
Shows a sun because I'm using light mode, it seems. Shows up as light-dark icon when you are having it follow system (browser's?) theme.

Light mode shows as a sun with a circle inside rays, which looks more like a cog than a sun. IMHO of course.

I would like an option in the gear to change text color. I'd like to ha e white on black, basically the opposite of the light theme.

My eyes are not so good any more (on mobile) :)

Edit!! Never mind, I see it's white now yay!! Lol

Edit again. The main page is still all blue on black back ground, individual threads, posts is white. Good enough!

Yes, the icon choice for light mode is unfortunate but there's little anyone can do about other people's taste or design.

It's not exactly the cog (which is a different icon with square sprocket tips) but it's unfortunately really, really close. Oh well.

Your profile page is pain to look at in dark mode :D
Not my fault. I have not uploaded a banner image, whatever web browser poison you are running shows what the forum software plus W1zzard's customizations display by default.

I do note that the profile page is handling my avatar photo slightly better (it's a transparent GIF) than pre-dark mode times.

When W1zzard returns from Computex perhaps he will look at improving how dark mode handles the profile page. There's also the main (non-forum) site that he has postponed.

But for sure I'm not going to be uploading any banner image for the foreseeable future.

:):p:D

omg my signature looks even better in Dark Mode, happy accident. :clap:

Dark mode is always better and easier on the eyes
It’s not. A lot of it is preference and it can be better in a dark environment, but it’s not objectively “better on the eyes”. I am not going to go into detail on light hitting the retina, pupil dilation, refraction and visual acuity, but sufficient to say there is actually a very good reason light background with dark text is still the standard and always will be. In the end, it’s a very person by person basis since no two set of eyes actually see the same.

First impression, I thought the website was broken. On the forum's homepage, there's too much blue. The blue links on black background are difficult to read.

Other than that I think it's down to preference. I don't care one way or the other. I use the light colored classic theme in XP and Windows 7, but in 10 and 11 I used a darker theme. It's more about the contrast balance than the brightness. I can turn down my monitor's brightness if white hurts to look at.

I wanted to make sure you really see it
In work I've got old monitor, and it looks strange, in home it looks great
Even smile faces in home looks better (or they are upgraded ? ) :D
:)
