Ok i'm still with my first build which has been running smooth as you like for months until recently.

I had my chip Overclocked to 3.8Ghz and this was prime95 stable around 14hours on the blend test. Cooling was fine temps during the small FFts occasionally creeped over the 70 mark but for seconds only and this is well within Q6600 G0 specifications.

Now, recently i reinstalled windows and all of my applications while overclocked at 3.8Ghz and after 2 - 3 days i began to experience the BSOD which became a more frequent until finally i attempted load in to windows and couldn't due to a corrupt .sys file.

I attempted to load windows but during the data transfer from CD to ram i experienced a further error - corrupt mraid35x.sys installation can not continue.

I was stuck for three days :banghead: I checked all my components in a back up machine, formated the hard drive and ran tests on the memory - all good.

Put my machine back together and :banghead: same error - Mraid35x.sys is corrupt.

I don't know how this worked but i tried to use Knoppix 5.1 bootable OS to run system diagnostics - not knowing how it works i simply loaded it up and ended up closing it down very quickly........

Then i had one more attempt at windows expecting the same error :D but no.... IT WORKED!!!

This time i loaded windows, applications and games at default settings on everything and i have not yet - touch wood - experienced any problems... Back to testing the stability of a new overclock and this time for 24hours i think.

If you managed not to get bored by this point and move on to a different thread can you answer 2 questions....???

1. Was my BSOD and data corruption errors the result of loading applications while in an unstable overclock? If so, i thought 14h of Prime95 was more than enough??

2. What the hell did loading and closing down knoppix 5.1 bootable OS do?

What do you mean frequencies locked?

I think the root of the problem is the fact that i installed windows while overclocked.

pci/sata freq's

you're right; it more than likely is the fact that you installed while OC'ed ;)

Agreed, I can't install any OS on my rig unless everything is at stock. I get the same errors as you when I overclock.

Yer frequencies are locked.

Does anyone know what the bootable Knoppix (Lunix) did to make the windows install work.

My guess is that there is certain on board memory functions maybe also corrupt files stored within the ram that are difficult to wipe? Bootable Knoppix (Lunix) loads everything in to the RAM and on shut down completely removes all buffered data. Did this remove the corrupt file??

I probably explained that very poorly but I'm not sure exactly what I'm saying... Just an educated guess.

Can anyone shed some light?

Never try to install an OS with an overclock. Systems hate it, ive experienced something similar.

Havent a clue what knoppix is, or else id shed some light on that.

No, knoppix does no "wipe" anything stored on the RAM. RAM is volatile memory, as soon as power is removed it loses its data.

Your CPU is handling the disk controlling and basic math functions like Prime95 provides do not stress the more advanced features of the CPU that the disk controller is requesting, thus your CPU might be stable to handle basic and some advanced math, but more complex features fail.

I can run my CPU up to 2.8 and it works for 99% of everything, but during video and audio work it occasionally corrupts pixels or it generates sparkling sound in audio.

Thanks Steevo...

I don't understand what it did then.

Before running Knoppix during the install of windows it would fail at the same point every time.... Even after cmos reset, hard disk re-format and a complete removal and then reinstall of all components..... I then loaded Knoppix which i don't really know how to use and then shut it down.... Then just for the banter i tried one more time with the windows CD..... No errors, loaded perfectly????

What did knoppix do???

Assuming it was Knoppix that fixed a hardware problem is silly. You may have had a dirty laser that caused the problems, or there could be a million things that had gone wrong.

Thanks
