can the standard dell 4700 psu and mobo handle the upgrade to:

1 eVGA 6600gt 128mb
2 two dell 1gb ram sticks

dell will sell you any of their parts but wont tell you what your comp can take

What is the wattage of your power supply and what is your +12 volt amp speed? (located on the side of your PSU)

And I wouldnt suggest getting a 6600GT (but if you already purchased, you can ignore the rest of this text) , I would recommend nVidia's 6800 GS for mainstream or if you can spend a little more, nVidia's 7800 gt (just assuming if you like nVidia only).

And I believe this thread should be moved to General Hardware.

unfortunatly, these upgrades are on a limited budget and for certain reasons, the case cannot be opened at the moment to examine the psu

dell also doesnt list the psu information on their sites

the only information i can provide is that the parts are standard for the dell 4700
dell lists this mobo as "CARD (CIRCUIT), GRAPHICS, 128, X300, SERVER ENHANCED, MRMGA8"
dell gives no information as to the specs of its psu, because they're dell

I don't think opening the side of your case voids your warranty, if that is what you are concerned about.

Don't buy Dell memory, it's extremely overpriced. If your power supply is anything like the one dell put in my 4600 then it's a 250 watt. I have a 420 Watt OCZ power supply in there now, upgrading the power supply won't hurt your motherboard as long as you get a good one. If you can't get into the computer right now because you're worried about voiding the warranty my advice is don't worry. There is no way they can tell if you've been in there, as long as you don't physically break something. Pull the power supply and look at it.

the dell 4700 psu is 305 so yes you need a bigger psu of couse so people on this site think 300 watts will be able to push you that and some there wrong a good 430 is good for what you have and it will leave you with abit of head room but if you dont want to buy a psu everytime you buy a gpu then go a bit higher with a 530 or higher buy it for a place you can return it because psu nowmader the brand go out more then anything memory is close 2nd though

im not one to nitpick, but evga says their 6600gt needs a minimum of 350 watts, so if the people here are right, i should be fine for the time being

as for the memory, the ocz 2gb value select (1gb x2), which says its 1.8 volts, shouldnt be too much for the mobo right?

I also have a dell dimension 4700 with a Intel P4 520 and 1GB ram. It does have a 305W power supply. I just bought an X800 GTO2 graphics card and unlocked to 16 pipes and overclocked it, works fine so far. If eventually the psu goes bad, so be it, then I'll upgrade it. My comp only has one HDD and the DVD burner and the sound is integrated into the mobo. Dell used to use mobo's with proprietary plugs but I've heard that they are using mainstream plugs now, I know mine has the standard 24 pin plug on the mobo. The exact specs of the power supply are in the full user's manual that you can print out off of your hard drive, there's a link to it on your Desktop when your comp is new. I had all of the exact same questions when I wanted to upgrade my comp.

I believe your comp would be fine with the 6600gt card.

If you have a dell the only thing that might be worth upgrading is the RAM (as most people do). The trick with Dell is that the computer's they sell arent easily upgradable. So you could prob. save a lot of time and hassle by just saving up and building your own computer. But if you want to upgrade anyway, then here is what you are going to need.

1. New PSU
2. New GPU
3. More RAM (If not entirely new RAM)

The reason you will need a new PSU is bc they dont put in a high voltage PSU (esp. when you dont have a GPU in there). It will prob. be between 175-250W which is nothing. Also, how much are you looking to spend. I ask this bc it might not even be worth upgrading. What I say is if you cannot afford to put at least a 6800GS into your computer then dont bother since most newer games will at least need that. In my opinion it will prob. be a waste of money and wont last long. Also, based on the price sells their RAM, you could get double the amount of RAM that is way better (1GB of RAM [2x 512MB] will run you about $100 and that is a good pair, just look on newegg). Well thats my two cents.

No, but if you call tech support and ask them they will tell you, "Only dell parts can go in dell computers." :wtf:

You can check and see what mobo and everything u have by using everest home edition. Its a free download. I would get it from http://www.filehippo.com/. Although the PSU is probably a 305 like everyone else has said. Best bet to know whether ur mobo can support the stuff is by finding ur mobo model and looking it up online. Everest home should definately help with this.

Another thing is depending on how cheap the computer was is what really dictates wether the parts are propriatry cheaper more proprietary.

I would suggest getting a better PSU also i use a 350W and if i add one more thing to my comp its definately goin to overload.
